camera is in M mode
focal length is 22mm (flash showing zoom at 24...i know why, no big deal on that)
aperture 250 (cant go faster with flash on)
flash seems to be in auto mode.
for some reason, my pics dont come out clear when i i'm in M mode on the camera using flash.
in auto...everything seems to look clear and sharp.

i quickly compressed in mspaint and i am not saying the bottom one is the sharpest picture i have ever seen, but it is much, much better than the top pic.
again, the only difference here was that the blurry pic was in M mode on the camera.
the 10-22 was set to auto for focus.
thanks.

if i put my lens in manual focus i can use the 580ex and i get sharp pictures....
it seems that when i put the lens in auto and half press the button, i can hear the lens focus and then it stops. when it stops, it is blurry.
gonna try with another lens....hmmmm

ok, i guess it is not a flash problem, i took off the 580 and it does the same thing in m mode on the camera with the lens on auto.
sorry guys.
however, i had the same issues with all 3 of my lenses.
mods- what would the appropriate forum be if/when the topic gets moved???

When in "auto" mode, is that P mode or the green square mode?
In the custom functions, do you have C.FnIV 1 set to 2 or 3?
What focus mode are you in? ONE SHOT, AI FOCUS, or AI SERVO?

auto meaning green box mode.
when i hold the cFn button down i see Fn 00 0
AI servo with all 3 lenses.
but as i stated above, i took the flash off and i had the same issues, so its obviously not a flash problem....
i brought my camera to work, so i can mess around with the settings here if needed.

Where is the cFn button? Please explain what you mean.

Disregard the previous question.
At first, I couldn't figure out what you meant by cFn button. (there is no cFn button on the camera) But then I looked at my 580EX II and saw it.
"Golf Nut" was asking you about the Custom Functions you may have set on your camera., not flash. We are trying to help you figure out why your camera won't focus in manual mode.
Check out cFn IV 1 in your camera. This custom function changes the way the camera Auto Focus operates. You may have accidentally set it so that it won't AF with the shutter button.

gotcha...
well when i half press the shutter button it focuses perfectly sharp (very quick) and then it stops at a blurry position...
i will check the cFn settings on the camera now...thanks for clearing that up for me.

That doesn't sound good.
There is no point checking the custom functions if the camera is focusing with the shutter button.
You may have a camera problem from what you describe. But sometimes these "problems" turn out to be user error.
It is strange that the lens focuses perfectly sharp and then stops at a blurry position. Watch the focus distance scale on the lens as this happens and see if you can tell what is happening. Does it stop close to the actual distance? or is it way off?

ok, i am in the Cfn IV settings, but i dont see where it would be set to 1 or 2...
all i see is

0000000
that is in the bottom left.
Thanks.

That just means that all your custom functions (1-7) are set to Zero. That is good.

ok guys....this has to be a low light problem...
i have my camera in my office, i just pointed it to 3 things and each time it focused perfect with a half press of the shutter button.
with the 10-22 btw.

ok, that's good, but what is the 1 or 2 golf nut was talking about?
obviously, there doesn't seem to be any issues with the Cfn IV settings, but i'm still curious

Each Custom Function has different options. As you scroll the wheel, you can see the options for each "operation".
C.Fn IV 1 is "Shutter button/AF-ON button" It has 5 options: 0 or 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 or 5

The reason one of the images you posted, the one shot in manual mode, is out of focus is because the camera was in AI Servo mode and there probably wasn't enough light for the camera to acquire focus without the focus assist beam from the flash (it's turned off when shooting in AI Servo mode). You should have been the focus confirmation light blinking when focus acquisition failed.
When you switched the camera to Auto mode, the camera automatically changed the AF mode to AI Focus. In that mode, the flash emits the focus assist light which allows the camera to easily acquire focus.

Probably means your "wide panel" is not pushed all the way in.
