It's the most talked-about and copied style of images recently. Yes, it's done in Photoshop, but I think a lot has to do with the right kind of photo to begin with.

There is also a photoshop plugin / filter named LucisArt that comes close to achieving that effect.

After all the hard work he put into processing the photo I thought he could at least have cloned out the blob of sensor dirt by his thumb!

Scott Kelby has an action for this. Also you can do it in lightroom if you visit Lightroom Killer Tips Blog then he explains how to do it in LR.

Its software called Lucisart.. Heres one from a recent shoot, I used it ver sparingly on this one mind you.

You don't need lucas art but it does make the results more uniform.

Done in raw converter then tweaked in cs3:

Well, Frank, I'm gonna have to respectfully disagree with that, at least partially. The 300 style is actually nice, but is much less pronounced - milder - than the OP example posted and those posted in this thread.

The OP sample posted and the samples posted in this thread are a little more extreme than the 300 look. To me, they look like a mixture of the Dave Hill look and that "way-too-tonemapped-in-photomatix" look.

And like the Dave Hill style and the photomatix over-tonemapped style, they tend to be done too much by people. They work best with certain images and with specific lighting.

I think the sample above of the folks at the piano is very good example of the style working. The people have the effect, but the black piano and background doesn't. It works very well in this image. The expression on the middle guy's face is incredible because it is pronounced by the effect. It's too bad the mic caught the chin of the woman.

P.S. to Zacker - this is probably one of the best applications of LucisArt I have ever seen.

IMO, any of these techniques are just a starting point & will be tweaked by the user, so the more links, the better.

i did that in camera raw. raised the the fill light and recovery slider's to about 100%. increased vibrancy, and desaturated the image. punched up the contrast and black level. took it into photoshop for some vignetting and alittle work on the skin. but i did find something online that i would like to try. check this out.

Thanks for the info.

Looks like I'm left out once again. I have not upgraded to CS3, so all those nifty controls people are always talking about do not exist in my version of ACR. Maybe Bibble?
