I'm going to disney in in a couple weeks, and I was looking to getting a cheap solution for temporary storage, as I am not planning on lugging my laptop with me on this trip. I already have a 20GB iPOD, and I was thinking about getting this card reader:

http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/71902/wo/jh6UbPow8CjD2u6TCJo0wnilc4g/2.0.0.11.1.0.6.9.21.0.1.0.1.1.2.1.0.13

does anybody have experience w/ it?

Thanks!!

I do. Doesn't really compare favorably to other gadgets designed specifically for the task (I'm a great believer in the right tool for the job.) But since you've already got the iPod anyway (that's the position I was in) it's reasonably cost effective.

Uploads are s l o w however, and don't for the love of God let it run out of batteries in the middle of an upload.

For this particular solution over the long term, I recommend a 'disc steno'. Best deal going, that I know of.

Good luck -chris

i wouldnt even bother... unless you have a few hours to transfer images... it really is that slow.

i have a 40gig image tank - but at around $300 that is prob more then you wanna spend, but i can upload 1gig of images in 6 min or so

start to look in the net for photo stores in or around disney that offer burn to cd from memory cards, most places, like walmart will do it for like $3 or so - you can run in, burn your images to a cd for $3 and then clear the card and go shoot some more - that may be your cheapest option

The iPhoto-pod can only show pictures it's not designed to upload faster.
I bubby and I looked at this option, it just seamed cheaper and easier to buy a few more CF cards and just download later at home. Or get a cheap used laptop on ebay just for dumping photo too. It doesn't have to be great.

Can a photo lab or Wal-Mart save RAW files on a CD?

It looks like you can take your CF cards to the camera centers at the parks, have your images burned to a CD, and carry on shooting.

This is from AllEarsNet.com ( the best source for news about WDW)

"As of January 3, film processing is no longer available at the
Walt Disney World theme parks or resorts. Instead, each of the
camera centers in the theme parks have been equipped with new
technology that allows guests with digital cameras to download
images from a digital media card to a CD. Disney resorts will
get this technology over the next few months."

The camera centers are located near the park entrances.

Does anyone have any experience with the Wolverine data storage units. This one listed at B&H looks like as much as I would ever need:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=321611&is=REG

From my 20D I could store about 2160 photos in RAW format, which is equivalent to 60 rolls of 36 exposure film ... which for me would be a lot of vacation pics (others may require more).

I have the Epson P 2000. It is great though a little spendy. 40 gigs, large fanatstic lcd screen, zoomable and downloads take about 5 minutes for a 1 gig card. It also can store and play MP3's and avi movies. It supports RAW image files too, which I always shoot along with large JPG's. Battery life is claimed to be about 2 1/2 hours of constant use. It has a built in rechargable battery.

I like it because I can download my cards in the field and never worry about filling it up. I took a large 50 shot pano in Upland Maui recently. It filled a 1 gig card. I would have been done for the day unless I had several more 1 gig cards. By the time I would buy enough 1 gig cards to last for a whole day I could have paid for the Epson a couple of times over.

If you don't mind the $499.00 price, or thereabouts, I highly recommend it. It has worked flawlessly, is easy to use. You can also hook it up to a TV for bigger previews when on the road. I never have to lug around my laptop now with this unit. I can't say enough good things about it, if you haven't noticed!http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif

never used the wolverine, but like i said - i have the image tank g2 - 40gb.... works great, just did a search on ebay for "image tank g2" and you can buy an empty one for around $75 and stick whatever size laptop drive you want in... takes less then 5 minutes to install the drives, very simple

i also picked up a p2000 2 weeks ago in japan. it absolutely rocks. the screen is unbelievable. it also plays mpeg4/divx/xvid and i get about 3 hours out of the batteries. i also made an external battery pack for nimh AA batteries

it has a cf slot and is much quicker than my xdrive2 at taking images off the card. and more importantly, it has a confirmation that the images were copied and will also display raw!!!

my only complaint is it won't print to the canon cp 330 - only to epson printers. hopefully, epson will make it pictbridge compatible w/ firmware update...

I have recently bought a PD7X and transfered my 30GB laptop drive to it (the drive was previously in my X's Drive Pro). The PD7X runs on 4 AA batteries and copies data from CF cards FAST! A 1GB card can be copied and verified in 3.5 - 4 minutes.

In comparison I could not recommend the X's Drive, it is slow, really slow!

I thought I would use the ipod for storage (40 gig) but it is slowwwwww. The cost of cards is so low now that you are better off buying extra cards. I bought my wife an Ipodphoto but it does not read RAW. She uses it to show people pictures of her grandkids, horses and similar momemtos. Resolution is only so so but it is handy.

I use the X-Drive Pro Vosonic 3310 only very rarely for holidays off the beaten track. The battery doesn't last long but it's a cheap unit, has been very reliable and doubles as an MP3 player also. If you plan on downloading at the end of the day in your hotel room it may be a good option for you. I paid A$280 (about US$210) in Australia so I'd expect it to be quite a bit cheaper in the US, home of consumer electronics. :)

Just noticed it's been superseded by the X-Drive II+ Photo Storage which retails here for about US$180 incl 30GB drive, pretty good value.

IPOD Photo, with 1.1 firmware & Camera connector (USB female to dock connector), offers a VERY convenient method of downloading off of CF cards. But one must have the Photo IPOD in order to take advantage.

Regular IPODs do have the capability of downloading photos off of CF cards but they require a separate device made by Belkin that chews batteries like candy. Generally get 2.5 downloads per 512MB CF card when utilizing Belkin device.

Time wise, utilizing the IPOD for downloading will be faster than going to any Walmart or photo place because you have to take into account the time lost going from/to the downloading location as well as waiting in line. If you have TWO CF cards, I would be impressed if one could, on average, fill the CF card FASTER than the download would take.

If you're going to bring the IPOD, MAXIMIZE it's use - download to it.
