I really have looked and searched, and I can't find opinions on the effectiveness/benefits/drawbacks of turning on "High Iso Noise Reduction" in the 40D Image options.
Any info appreciated, I haven't really been able to notice any difference with it on or off at ISO1600, but maybe I'm missing something???

You won't notice anything if you're shooting RAW as it only gets applied to JPEGs produced in-camera. When I was shooting JPEG I noticed some difference when using High ISO Noise Reduction, but I wouldn't rely on it as it can make pictures look a little "plasticky". Better to do NR in software IMO.

it also lowers your burst FPS.

Will do. I need to get noise ninja. From what I've read, that's one of the best noise reduction software available right now.

I have to agree with that. I process RAWs with Bibble Pro which includes the basic Noise Ninja and it does a great job.

I leave it off, and let Lightroom handle the noise reduction. Or you can use Noise Ninja. I'm very skeptical that the camera firmware is going to do a better job at this than PC software dedicated to the task.
