After going bankrupt this week. I got the desired 17-40 on my D300.
Went out today to get feeling with this lens.(see attached photos)
Was very pleased to feel the smooth zooming and to see the qualities of the photos.
The lens feels solid and gives a very controlled feeling when taking photos.
I also think the F4 is very fast. Zooming goes fast and silent.
Some people say there is hardly any difference between 18-55 and 17-40. But the contrast, colors and sharpness are much better.
Untill now I am very please with this lens and looking forward to take more photos with it. Wished I had bought it earlier.

Same here, I'd like to get that lens soon too. I was going to try and hold out for the 70-200 f2.8 IS but that's allot of money to have to save up for, lol.

I don't know about you guys, but the photos don't look that good. Not saying that the loebas' images are bad, but the posted images are all JPG artifacted with tones separating out, etc., etc. They look horrible.

I've got a very good monitor with which I am looking at these posted photos, and I don't know why they look that way.

Anyone else seeing this same problem?

I right clicked and saved one to my desktop and opened it and it looks fine. It seems that the forum software is over-stretching a low resolution version and that is causing it to look bad. Check that loebas...

Very nice shots. I really really like your saturated colors on your images. Thanks for the link.

I suspect that there's a good deal of JPG compression. Either they were "saved for web" at a low setting, or the web site where they are saved has some compression action to save web space.

Yeah I gotta agree about those images.. what's the deal with the clouds? Are these images JPEG compressed down to 1k per image?!?!

I can see the stepping too. It's just jpeg compression nothing more. But for images under 1K they look pretty good. I get the idea how sharp the lens is.

And they're compressed enough that you can send them over smoke signal!

I have no doubt you'll take some great photos with this combo, but these aren't it. I can't seem to find a subject in them? When looking at the images, my eye is drawn to the 'back' button.

Hi loebas,

Firstly, congratualtions on your new purchase! However, I think I'll refrain from making any comments about your lens here until we see the photos reposted using a MUCH higher JPG quality setting. Because as it stands, there is NO WAY anyone could make any judgement at all about your new lens and its quality.

Just my $0.02! ;)

Thank you for your remarks. I took all my photos in the high lowest JPEG setting on the camera. In order top post the images on this forum I compressed them in PS (save fro the Web).
Do you have any advice to post hirger quality Web images ?

yes, the first image is at 84 Kb which is way to low for an image of that size. try something around 150-200k or around 100k with the resolution set to 800x600

The "save for the web" setting in PS usually compresses an image a bit too much in order to make the file smaller. You might just try resizing it to something like 750 pixels by 500 pixels and saving it in the normal way (<file><save as...>). Set the JPG quality to around 10 in PS when you save it. Your saved image will be small enough to fit on people's screen even if they have their resolution set at 800X600, but it will still contain the full color of the original image.

Even compressed, I can see that this lens and camera will work very well for you. Its a great lens and you will enjoy the images that it produces.

Glad to know you are happy with your lens. Mine is going back to the shop, as it has been very disappointing. :(

Sure

Use a smaller image size

About 600-800 pixels on the longest side should be fine.
