I shot these today with a D300 and 70-200 with 2.0 TC. The fire was a couple kilometers away. These pilots are amazing. This is one huge Airplane and they are just skimming the tree tops.

Very cool series. That's an old Orion P3, used by the Navy as sub chasers, they are also the planes those crazies fly into huricane walls. :)

Excellent trio of shots.
Did you share these with the folks over at "Transporation" as well? Got some plane-crazy people who'd like these as well...

Very well captured!
What's the red stuff they're dropping?
kenyc
9th of August 2008 (Sat), 11:52
It's fire retardant, to try and slow or stop the fire.

Wonder what that does to the environment downstream?

Wow, great captures. Excellent timing on the drops.
Wonder what that does to the environment downstream?I've thought about that too, but according to WikiAnswers...it may not be. Though I don't know if that answer can be trusted.

Sometimes, some people have all the luck of being in the Right Place at the Right Time. Unless of course.....you were running for your life and your camera is all you had time to grab!
Great photos.

Robert, I found this earlier (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phos-Chek), The red stuff is called Phos-Chek;
"The main components of Phos-Chek are ammonium polyphosphate, diammonium phosphate, diammonium sulfate, monoammonium phosphate, attapulgus clay, guar gum (or a derivative of guar gum), hydroxypropyl, and trade secret performance additives. Phos-Chek comes in several different formulations with varying degrees of the above components."
It's that "trade secret performance additives" part that I don't trust. And anything the government says. ;)

Hmmm...trade secret...that is curious, but that wouldn't be a government thing...that's a corporate trade secret. Funny how they threw in there "acts as a fertilizer". The MSDS sheets say "practically non-toxic".
BCROSE: Is that the only plane you got a shot of? Any others flying that day?

Well then there's all the pollution from the airplane......

This one is actually a Lockheed L-188 Electra turbo-prop airliner. It was bulit from 1957-1961 and later developed into the P-3 which first flew in 1961.

Ah, didn't know that, you can see the lineage of the P3 in it though.. The P3 has been around almost as long as me, and my brother flew in them for years with the navy. :)

Nice shots.
Them pilots are some crazy guys.
I'm friends with our district forrest fire warden (C-9, New Jersey) Anytime his plane comes out he lets me know and I go-a-runnin with the camera.
Best I could do, wasn't dropping due to the 500,000 volt transmission lines overhead.
