View Full Version : Color Calibration - Eye-One - WTF?

I decided to finally invest in a color calibration unit (X-rite Eye-one Display LT) and suddenly things have gotten a-bit more complicated than I thought it would be. At least seems that way...Immediately since calibration I noticed a lot of my photos displaying in Lightroom had a blue cast to them, not all, but a lot...okay...
Now there's also a huge difference in color between web images and photoshop, ect, which I've never experienced in such a drastic form. For instance, if I copy and paste a Grey background from firefox into Photoshop it's Blue...
Here's an example of a photo exported from Lightroom, in Windows Fax Viewer, and then Firefox...

The only way I can find to see what it will look is to change to Proof Colors -> Monitor RGB. Which I've NEVER had to even touch...Before diving into calibration I did notice some differences between print/web colors but it was never this huge.

Can any of you color nuts let me know what I'm missing here (if anything)...maybe this is how things are suppose to be seen? I have no idea what is 'right' or 'wrong' here...
I work in sRGB and I send my photos to be printed in sRGB to WHCC...I'm working on an Eizo SW2411. Color Management is set to be using my latest calibration profile.

I've always had that set.

If I understand your post correctly, this is what's happening:
Your images are sRGB. You use FF2 or FF3 without color management enabled.
Windows Vista fax viewer is color managed (AFAIK).
Photoshop and LR (and all other color managed applications) display identical, and are right.
The other applications show you the difference between your monitor profile and sRGB.
Quite a difference in this case however.
How did you calibrate? Try Native whitepoint, calibrate to D65, gamma 2.2 and approx. 120 Cd/m^2.
If the result is much off 6500K, try a different whitepoint setting for your display.
Here is a "manual (http://www.imagescience.com.au/ColourControl/colourProducts/gmUsingEyeOneDisplay.html)" on the iOne

I assume that you have downloaded and applied the extra bit of firefox that allows it to understand colour managment? Why it does not come as standard I'll leave to their management because it makes no sense to me.
The Windows fax viewer can be ignored, because it simply does not have a clue. Bless it's cotton socks.
Personally I'd not be too bothered if firefox was not accurate either, as long as Photoshop is right.
I've just been redoing my own calibration. (with the same kit).

Windows Picture and Fax Viewer is colour-management aware, I just checked.
To turn on colour-management in Firefox, you don't need to download anything, just do that About:Config thingy.
And I think they don't turn it on by default because it does slow down performance, and the average joe doesn't care about colour, just quick browsing.

May I spoil the party?
(Burp!).
Please, please don't buy any light versions of calibration tools!
You save only 120$, and shave off tons of nerve mass.
Well, I did the same thing, and returned my lite color crap tool, and then got happy with the i1 display 2.
Color troubles can change your eye color to red, and not red eye tool will help your boiling temper.
Give yourself a break and buy a reliable tool...

And I read that bit of information about having to download something from their web site here! I'll never trust any of you ever again!

The download is simply a script that changes the setting:

To be honest, I figured since the hardware is exactly the same that I could find the software online or from someone else...not worth the extra $ imo.

Thank you!
Things seem to be working after I went and reset my Eizo back to default settings then calibrated and rebooted.
My whitepoint setting was actually 6400k so, pretty close!

Is it really the same?
Color Match can be downloaded for free from macupdate.com

You have an Eizo ColorEdge?

I read somewhere that the LT device was the same as 2 and that the software was the only difference. Could be incorrect?

It's an Eizo SW2411, only a couple hundred cheaper than the lowest CE, haha.
No template, made the basic layout and used slideshowpro to display my photos.

I can't think so. The software can be downloaded for free,so, if the hardware can't be the same.

I was considering it. But you need to own Adobe Flash.
Or did you buy the Lightroom plug-in for 29$?

" * Download and install latest version of i1Diagnostics (available from the Colour Confidence Support website).
* Plug the i1 Device into a powered USB port at the back of the computer.
* Quit all other applications.
* Launch i1 Diagnostics v2.4.1.
* Go to Service > Licence update, enter the code and click unlock and OK. "
Originally I used the Flash version of SSP but since I use Lightroom I got the plugin for that instead.

Don't know what upgrade code you are referring to.
I have an older Match software on a CD, and when I migrated to my new computer, I didn't want first load the old software, then upgrade (which installs a copy next to the old software), and then delete the old software.
On the new computer I just downloaded the latest version of Match. No code needed.
I haven't seen the light version's hardware, but I can't image it being the same.

i have the iD2 and only installed the iMatch software for calibrating. downloaded it off their site since I needed the newer version for 64bit. so theres gotta be something thats different in the hardware.
if you check this website .. http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews.htm .. he did a review on the iD2 and a few other calibrators.
