I just got a setup to get my flash off the camera. I've been reading up on strobist and here is my first try today.

Canon 400D
f/13
1/200"
ISO 100
Canon 430EX at 1/64 power

Flash set a few inches from the subject on camera right at a 45 degree angle and slightly above. Subject sitting on black granite tile. Background was my ugly gray dining room wall.

Here's the setup shot (taken with a P&S and *gasp* on camera flash ;))

What do you think?

I think that if that were a real couple, the lighting would be spot on.

How many shots did you have to take to choose the right power setting for the flash? That is something I am struggling with so I am curious.

Thanks - I have a long way to go before I can get this going on a real couple that are 5-6x the size of this little decoration. :)

I started at 1/8 power with the strobe 3-4 feet from the subject and didn't like how bright the background was, so I brought the strobe all the way to 1/64 and brought it as close as I could without having it in the frame. Then I just tweaked the aperture so the highlights were as bright as possible without blowing them out.
