I've been using my S50 for over a year and a half with no problems whatsover, but suddenly I started getting corrupt images on both of my memory cards at the same time.
Anywhere between 25% and 50% of the photos taken develop colorful "bars" across the bottom of the photo, and sometimes more. The problem can be seen right in the viewer on the camera, and also downloads the image that way most of the time. Occassionally, I do get an image that looks bad on the viewer but ends up okay on the computer, but not very often.
The movie recorder also gets corrupted usually at the end of a movie - displaying a very jumpy screen and ending a little early.
I've reformatted the cards, and even bought a new one, but they all still have the same problem.
I have to assume that the camera is bad, but I haven't been able to find any mention of this problem on the Internet yet.
If anyone has any ideas to try, I'd like to hear them!

I've seen this on my new S70 also. Although the cause is unknown, I've have much better luck by copying the files instead of moving the files from the CF.

Might I ask what brand of CF you use and what is its speed? It just go me thinking that if copying the files is more reliable than moving the files, There might be a problem with a simultaneous read/delete operation being executed on the card?
I've experienced (on my s45) a save operation was botched, such that it was not able to view the movie. Since then the card has died. Since then I got myself another card that is rated as 52x. Movies and raw images save faster, and I haven't encountered that problem since.

There is a lifespan on memory cards and hard drives. I am currently experiencing this problem with images on my hard drive deteroriating. This is why buying the best CD you can afford for backup purposes. Best thing is to test using a brand new card and see if the problem persist.
What can go wrong and I am not that technical but I think the buffer may be going to computer heaven soon.

Just came across this, you may want to disable the write behind cache.

My S230 has a problem with horizontal bars and overexposed images in photos taken in bright light. Can see bars on LCD as well as in photos uploaded to computer. White balance and everything else set at auto.
Canon says it is hardware problem and cost to repair is 150 to 300 US dollars. Has anyone else seen this problem?

Canon should not be charging that much for repair because the cost of the S230 has dropped. If you pay that much, you may as well buy another camera.
try flashing the firmware first and see if it helps. I don't remember the site off my head but it's something like bebit...

I have a Sandisk 512 MB, Kodak CX6445, and an Easyshare Dock.
I have experienced problems transferring files only twice.
Once when I tried to use my computer's built in card reader and just today when using my dock and the Kodak Easyshare software.
Today, when I tried to transfer the photos, the software indicated that there were 21 pictures, but only showed 5 and two were only partially shown (mostly blocked out).
I then tried to put the card in my computer's card reader and it said that the files/card were corrupted.
I then unprotected the 21 files as I had protected them to delete other files but not them.
I then re-booted my computer, turned off all other programs, including Norton Antivirus and Microsoft Anti-Spyware.
I then put the disk back in my camera dock and this time all 21 pictures came up just fine.
So....I am not sure if it was just the rebooting, turning of the anti virus/spyware software, unprotecting them, or a combination of any of these, but I was able to get all of my photos.
I normally don't have problems transferring files from my camera, but it could have something to do with the fact that I had protected the 21 files, then deleted all of the other ones (from my last transfer), then tried to transfer the protected files.
Anyway, I am glad that I got all the files off the disk.
Oh, and lastly, the fact that I could review all of the pictures on my camera, even though my computer said they were corrupted, lead be to believe that they were still there and that there was a solution.
My advice, try doing any or all of the steps I did before deleting the files or re-formatting your card.

From experience.
1) Don't delete files straight off the CF card whether via camera or CF reader.
2) Don't pull out the CF card straight from the reader whilst connect to the computer. Pull the Reader out first and then the CF card out of the reader.
3) If you are not using Win XP then I suggest that you don't pull the reader straight out with of the usb drive before de-activating the remote drive.
Cheers,
Ben
