The digital ELPHs are really good for that.

The PowerShot SD20 is definitely pocket size. It's 3.5" x 1.8" x 0.7". It doesn't offer a zoom lens, but it's f/2.8 which is pretty good for one of these things.

If you want something even smaller than that, I used to have a Casio Exilim that took pretty good, 3MP photos. It's only 11mm thick, which is about 0.4", and has a nice LCD. Another option that is good is the Sony DSC-T1. A friend of mine has one, and it takes nice 5MP shots and does 640x480 video at 30fps which is a nice bonus. A little bigger than either of the other two, but only by a little.

If you are somewhat of an advanced amateur, I'd say go for the S40 or S50, which can be had on the cheap (around $200-250). They offer great usability, durability, and RAW format. There are plenty on sale on eBay.

Just got an SD200 and I take it everywhere. It's got 3.2 megapixels, 3x optical zoom, 2 inch lcd, and takes awesome video. You can find 'em around $200-300. Picture quality is great...this is coming from a photojournalism major.
