Hi
I'm new to the site. My friend let me borrow his 300d with the standard lens kit 18-55mm for a month and I'm loving every photo I've taken from it. Having only a point and shoot canon before I really would like to move up the camera ladder with a d-slr.
Now I'm having a small dilemma. I'm thinking of buying a new 300d (considering the £100 rebate they offer)but was offered a used canon d60 (at half the price of the 300d)which has about the same pixels as a 300d. I have tried to read as much as i can about this model. I know its alot older the digital rebel but dont know any more than that. I'm sure some of you have use the d60 any comments about this? I will mainly use the camera during family holidays and when i go trackdays meets. If you had the choice will you go for the d60 or the 300d?
Thanks in advance.

Go with the 300D, the D60 is out of focus. http://photography-on-the.net/forum/images/icons/icon10.gif
Actually I would take the D60 (if it is in good shape), acquire some lenses, play around with it for a while then sell it for twice what you paid for it and upgrade later this year.

Like yourself, i have just recently got into photography and bought the 300d.a complete impulse buy but one i havnt regretted. i cant say that ive used the d60 but if you look at any of the reviews on the 300d, they will all say the same thing - the best value DSLR in its class. and if you look around, you can buy new or nearly new ones for even cheaper than the 100 rebate offer. there are plenty on ebay if you dont mind spending that much online and you trust the seller. always worth checking buyer reviews on the seller first.
i swear by my 300d but the only problem is that now im into it and checking out the other hardware, im sure i'll soon want something better.

Personally I would go for the 300D for the following reasons;
1. Assuming £600 for body and kit lens, therefore £300 for D60. If you are like me, and many others on this forum, that difference will be slight when you start to add other lenses and accessories. (And you will) DSLR can be a very costly hobby.
2. You will be buying new technology with the 300D.
3. How many frames has the D60 shot, bearing in mind a DSLR has a finite amount before the shutter mechanism needs to be replaced, 50000 shots springs to mind.
See here....http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=4580#21081
4. The new EF-S lenses will fit the 300D not the D60.
I have never used the D60 or 300D therefore I can't speak for quality or handling.
BTW for trackday meets I would think you'll need longer reach than the kit lens. There are many here who can advise on motorsport photography.

I'd wait two months and get the sucessor to the 300D. The 300D is a big step up, but the new one wil be eevn bigger. If you can't wait get the D60 then upgrade in a year or so - for the first while the limiting factor will be you, not the camera - at least it was/still is sometimes for me.

Or.........If the 300D successor comes out in a couple of months the 300D will fall in price so.................. :?

If the D60 really is half what a 300D would be go for it. The sensor is the same so the photos will be the same. A very small number of D60s did have a back focus issue, however its very likely this has been fixed if the camera has been used for a while. The D60 is slightly slower to use than the 300D but also slightly better featured and definitely better built. If I'd been offered the same choice I would have taken the D60 in a heartbeat. The price difference will buy you an extra lens. :)
So go get the D60, the lack of access to EF-S lenses is no great loss.
