I'm looking around for good rechargeable AA batteries for my flash and Hyperdrives, as my current ones are well past their prime.

Any recommendations for brands, what not to get, why etc?
Also who has the best deals (that don't just ship to the US)

Thanks in advance!

Sanyo Eneloops or something similar. Search the forums here, there are many threads on it. Also, take a look at:

ignore me, i should of google'd before i asked.

theyre only 2000mAh though, would something like 2700mAh be better for a 580EX Mk2?

Yep I highly recommend the Sanyo Eneloops too.

Been using Duracell NiMHs, the pre-charged ones that are similar to the Eneloops, and they've been working fine for me.

Try a charger that will let you condition your batteries first. They may still be fine, just not getting a proper charge anymore due to memory effect.

I like my Sanyo's as backups but my Energizers are the first to be used at 2500mah.

That's the thing with the Eneloops and similar type low discharge batteries. I keep 10 2700mAh AAs on a trickle charge and if I'm going to do a shoot I go ahead and charge up 16-24 batteries.

I've been doing research on chargers to replace my old crappy one too, thanks for the info. Looking at the Maha C401FS - as it will come to Nepal with me for use with 12V solar charger - the C-9000 weights 600g, so that's out of the picture at the moment.

I'd love to get a charger that can do slow and fast charging, conditioning and single batteries - but Maha's smaller chargers are either one or the other, so the 401 is the pick for doing 2 out of the 3.

I was put onto a great link with a rechargable battery review:

if any one is interested. The Powerex 2700mAh NiMH AAs come out best, so I'll be looking into getting some of those.

The Eneloops are better than the 2000mAh sound, after a few days your Energizer 2700mAh will be below 2000mAh.
I kepp 3 sets of Eneloops for my flash and it will be fine, their current is even higher than the one from the Energizer.,

I've been using Eneloops in high-draw "hot wire" Franken-flashlights with good luck. As mentioned, they seem to perform better than their 2000 mAh rating would lead one to believe.

I've also used the 2500 mAh Energizers in my flash and haven't noticed that they last "x" number of flash cycles more than Eneloops.
