Ok, we're at a cross roads of whether we should offer digital images to our list of things for sale.

Currently we only sell prints and canvas wraps.

We've been approached by a few people that we have done pictures for and they asked if we sold digital images, we came up with a price they didn't take us up on the offer but they were friends and we're just curious about it.

Ok so if you sell digital images along with your prints, how do you price it? Our concern is that their just going to buy the digitals of the ones they want and print them to their hearts content. How do you do it then and make money? And how do you charge for it in relation to your prints for sale?

TIA

I sell a CD to the bride and groom from weddings, but I don't sell individual image files. Suprisingly even people who buy the CD still occasionally order prints, and parents, freinds, and family often order prints. One couple bought the CD and both her and her mother spent another $1000 on prints! That's rare though.

If I sold individual image files i'd sell it at the price of my highest print, or maybe a little more. I doubt anyone would buy it, especially if the B&G have the CD.

Guess I should say this is for a portrait studio, and not for weddings, though it does give me an idea.

I made a bunch of posts last week about files and portrait sessions, have a poke around the forum you'll probably find them. Basically there's no reason for you to sell them.

If you are going to sell the CD of images, you will typically loose out on the print sales. So the price of the CD should be at least the same as your average profit on print sales. That way you won't be loosing sales, just changing the format in which you deliver the images to the client. If you price it at anything less, you are discounting your prices and loosing profits.

Ok so basically We have the choice of just selling digital images to people or Prints.

The thing is we really enjoy doing the prints, having the hands on the finished product, but its the digital age now, and people would want digital images as well.

How successful has anyone been doing low-res images with no right (or really ability to print) and then selling prints as well?

Guess we want the best of everything, and to increase our saleablity to the customer as well.

I'm in the same boat, so many people want digital images.

Im thinking at pricing low res images (500-600 pixels wide) at about half/ 3 quarters of the price of my 4x6.

I'm also think about something that you can only purchase the digital photo as long as you purchase a print with it, maybe even throw it in for free or something, Keeps the customer happy.

Just ideas at the moment, gotta think how viable it will be economically.
