What was your first camera or serious camera? When and how old were you? Mine was a Kodak Duaflex IV with the Kodak lens. I got it in 1956 when I was 10. That's me with it in my avatar.

Sony A-100.
Want to know something funny, I bought it one year ago with no knowlegde of photography, I walked in knowing I was going to walk out with a good camera, and I did, but one year later I change brands and all that. Couldn't be happier than I am now.

Canon AE-1 hand me down when I was 8 or 9, around 1984. The first one I sought out and bought myself was my first Nikon F3 in high school.

The first camera that was all mine would have been a small Kodak 110 camera during my Junior year in High School in 1987. I took a class trip to Washington DC and wanted a camera to document the trip.

My first "serious" camera was a Rebel film camera in 1996.

My first serious digital camera was my 20D in 2006.

Pentax MV-R that was passed down to me by my older brother in '94. I used it some in high school, then picked it up again in grad school. Was my only "serious" camera until last year when I bought a Rebel XTi.

When I was bout 15 my aunt's husband borrowed me his Pentax ME Super (http://mcfaddenphoto.com/camera_manuals/me-s_man.htm) with a couple of lenses.

After that there was many many years in between without cameras, but seeing world through that Pentax started it all.

I appropriated my dads polaroid camera when I was maybe eight. Put it in my Little Mermaid backpack and carried it with me everywhere. I remember thinking that he was mean about buying me film for his camera.. After that I had a vast collection of those disposable cardboard box numbers through elementary and Jr. High.. And bought myself a VERY fancy (to me) kodak easy share something or other. I remember thinking that it had to be good because it was five whole megapixels. That stupid thing ate double A batteries like you wouldn't believe. And then I wisened up and bought my Pro 1 and after that my XT.

Picked up a T-70 from an op-shop about a year ago. Then got a T-90, moved on to digital with a 20D, and got a 40D about a month ago.
Man, everyone else are old hands:D

1st camera was a Kodak 110 (as mentioned above and I still have the developed prints!!!), Samsung Point & Shoot 35mm that lasted me about 10 years and 3 deployments, Minolta Maxxum 5d, SONY T-10 pocket rocket I carry all the time, and then my current Konica-Minolta 5D slr. Not much variety..... But I am looking to upgrade!

What's next?

For some reason, I am stuck on a Canon EOS 40D. Why is that?

I have yet to buy my first "real" camera. Going to buy a Rebel XT. Hope to be half as good as most on this site.

My first serious camera was a Nikon F. I worked summer in high school and saved the bucks for the Nikon F, nikkor 50mm f2 & nikkor 135 f3.5 lenses. This was about 1973-74.

I could not afford the Ftn (light meter) finder so I shot everything using a Sekonic Leader light meter of my dad's from 1954 era.

I shot B&W film exclusively and almost immediately I began doing my own darkroom work, too.

Best thing that happened to me for I learned things the old-fashioned way and today have in-depth understanding of exposure relationships of ISO, f-stop & shutter speed.

Because it's a damn fine camera.

And a lot more. Give someone a flash to use, tell them the GN and see if they can figure out which f/stop at what range.

First I bought was some Yashica or Rollei plastic fantastic consumer model I think with a 'Carl Zeiss' lens fixed into it. It was around 1991-2 and bought for my first trip to India after reading some photo magazines.

It took some great shots that I mounted in an album when I got back. Was quite pricey if I remember at the time. Took 35mm film of course, and I still remember the sounds and smells of the surrounding jungle as I walked up the steep hill from Kovalam Beach to the local village, and lots of smiley, waving children, to get them sent off to Trivandrum, the nearest town, for processing. It was then a thrill to get them back a week or so later, walking down the hill and showing the gleeful kids the shots.

For my next big trip I got a 1.2mpx Kodak DC 240 with 2x digital zoom. Came with a huge 8mb CF card! Was a very nice design and would still look good today. Very expensive at the time and it took many, many shots over the 6 months on the road, but finally succumbed to the strain of travelling in the Kalahari. We got a reconditioned Kodak DC 280 mailed from Johannesburg which had a 2mpx sensor and more zoom. I only gave that away about 18 months ago and it still worked fine.

Shortly after getting that one, and on a trip back to the UK, I bought a Sigma SA5 SLR with a couple of lenses: a crap 28-200mm, or something, and a Sigma 300mm 5.6 that I got off ebay. I was more into wildlife by now and so that was first go at getting closer than 3x digital zoom ;-) Was a great camera and fantastic reviews at the time. Bought on a whim walking past a Jessops in London and seeing it in the window.

After two years the trip was over and I came back to the UK. Played around with the Sigma for a while but digital had bitten and so I then bought the 300D. First lenses were the kit lens, the excellent 70-300mm APO Macro Sigma and the Canon 50mm ...

My first 'real' camera was a 35mm Russian 'Zorki 4' rangefinder & 50mm lens - Got this back in 1973 as a birthday present. I then bought myself a Canon AV-1 SLR around 1978 and eventually had a 35mm, 50mm, 135mm and 200mm lens. Then around 1980(ish) came a Canon A-1.
Since then I've had Minolta, Nikon and then Canon EOS.

When I was about 8, my continued pestering eventually paid off (well, sort of) and I was given a disc camera. Crappy auto-nothing, fixed focus, fixed lens, and fixed exposure values. Negatives so small that they would make a compact's sensor look pretty generous! Amazingly, I haven't kept any of those shots.

My first use of an SLR was my father's Minolta 7000 around about 1989. I got my own first SLR (EOS 100) in 1993. Got a 5 a little later, then nothing new until the 40D.
