Ok so we had a tri state meet for our Mazda RX8 club, everyone turned up and then when it got later most left, apart from one guy, he was taking pics of his car, so i went over and we talked, hed already seen some of my photography on the rx8 forum and mentioned it, so i started taking some pics. I edited them all last night and it took me a while and i posted the 800x600 ones on the forum, he really likes them........

my question is is it wrong of me to charge him for the full resolution pics? and if not then how do i go about wording it when he asks for them, i know he def wants them....

If he wants them for commercial use, charge him. If he just wants them for personal use, that is up to you. If they were of his car, I would be humble and provide them full res with a small signature or watermark.

Most members of the public will hope you will provide pictures for free. If they are not of his car, I would not hesitate about charging, even just a small fee.

Don't feel bad since it was your time and effort. Think of it as a bonus.

This is one of the times that it pays to have a gallery on Smugmug or Zenfolio....you can post the images there....set a price for them and if people are interested...they can buy the prints directly. Just because the photos are of his car does not mean you are under any obligation to give away your work.

Has anyone ever ordered from smugmug?
How is the quality of the prints?

They are actually quite good, 99% of customers would not be able to tell the difference between that, mpix, and whcc anyway, so it's perfectly fine.

if i were to upload the pics to smugmug and then he purchased the prints, he would only get the prints though? he wouldnt get the file right? because im sure hes going to want the file

You can offer file downloads again. I suggest only using the "personal use" thing though, and NEVER enable downloads, because then nobody will buy it off you if you want to sell it. "personal use" downloads can be set to three different sizes 1MP, 4MP, original, and works exactly like print sales.

Just because he wants the file doesn't mean you have to give it to him you know

Give him a few prints, or a CD with more images, but fairly low res and for personal use only... in exchange for signed model and property releases, so you can sell the images commercially, if you wish.

Yeah that would be a good idea. I've just never sold anything commercially. So wouldnt even know where to start doing that
