Looks like a squash bug. I'm not sure of the specifics. I'd encourage you to post it to a site I frequent, BugGuide.net. We need more contributors from the western US. Here's one that looks similar, a seed bug:

It's from the order Hemiptera for sure,. what are called "true bugs" (ie: bugs are an order.. not just a generic name for insects)
Of which the Squash bug (Anasa tristis) is a member and definately looks a lot like this. There are many with this general look though.. the Family Hemiptera: Coriidae includes the squash bug and leafooted bug, coried bug etc...
there's also the Family Hemiptera: Pentatomidae which bears a strong resemblance... the fan like bulges on the rear legs seen in your image are more defined in most leaf footed bugs (this is the "leaf") and yet,. Squash bugs don't have these "leafs" at all.. so it's a tough call on this one.

Doh!
Boones link nailed it.. "seed bug" looks quite on track.. the same smallish "leaf" displayed,... Cool.
Great shot by the way.

It looks very much like what we would call a "shield beetle" over here. That is as scientific as it gets from me tonight. :)
Cheers
