View Full Version : A70 monitor freakout

The LED monitor on my A70 freaked right before Christmas. It seemed to be producing purple, horizontal-line abstractions of whatever I point the camera at—so abstract you couldn't make out any details. I was able to capture and download the distorted images, by the way.

It seemed like the problem was solved when I took out the rechargeable batteries and put in regular AA's. The distortion was gone and reality returned to my monitor. After I recharged the batteries and put them back in, the problem seemed to go away.

Then a few days ago I turned the camera on and Purple Haze was back again. I tapped on the LED and it went away.

Yesterday I turned it on and the problem was back. Tapping did no good. Turned it on and off several times and finally it returned to normal. Last night I used the camera without any problems.

Has my camera acquired the ability to read auras or penetrate into alternate dimensions?

Should I just learn to love these purple-liney versions of reality and abandon my attachment to the old visual paradigm?

Does this sound like a battery problem? Do rechargeable batteries go bad?

Was the tap-the-monitor solution just a coincidence?

Should I look into the possibility of card failure, which I just now read about in relationship to some other posted monitor issues?

Any suggestions or theories?

PS As far as I know, there was no camera trauma involved.

I own a A70 and the only time i've seen purple lines in mine was when I was pointing it directly at a strong source of light, like the sun.
I think the purple aberrations are the result of overloading the camera's ccd. My first thought was that perhaps your rechargeable batteries were giving out too much juice and overloading the circuit, though I'm no expert on the matter.

So to answer your questions:
> Does this sound like a battery problem? Do rechargeable batteries go bad?
Perhaps. Rechargeable batteries do give out more power than regular batteries, but I didnīt know they could fail in this manner.

> Was the tap-the-monitor solution just a coincidence?
If it wasn't, it's my experience that you're about to lose your camera. When you fix misbehaving electronics by tapping them, it means they'll not be working for a lot longer.

As for your other questions, who knows? Maybe you *are* reaching into the great beyond. Say hi for me.

But seriously, does this happen mainly during the day? And did it only happen with rechargeable batteries?

I am having the same problems. My camera is about a year old. The problem is intermittent. I also tried fresh batteries....no luck. Today I could only get good shots using the Program feature....Automatic and others were showing the purple haze and blurred spots. Later in the day auto worked! When it is acting up, the images tend to look fine until I press the button to initiate the focus/sensors...then it turns pinkish purple and white drippy spots show up. I tried changing the focus method (e.g. to spot) but that didn't work. I don't know why "program" mode worked.

My daughter took a movie using the camera and the purple haze came and went in the middle....weird!

I am frustrated at not having a reliable camera. I was so in love wih this one until a few weeks ago when this started.

If anyone has more insight I would love to have it!

Please see my problem also. My A80 behaved EXACTLY the same way before the LCD got totally white and unusable. I really don'y know what is the problem.
