I want to purchase a 77mm circular polarizing filter for my 24-70/2.8L but noticed that the difference in cost between a Canon filter and "General Brand" at BH is significant. Is there any real noticeable difference and is it worth the cost? Thanks!

Remember that this filter will be between your glass and the outside world, it is very essential that it be the same quality as the lens. A 77mm CP means this is probably an L, or f/2.8 lens, with some terrific picture quality possiblities.
Want cheap plastic in the line?
May not be plastic, I don't know. But still, would you not rather prefer a good piece of glass in this position?
Canon is not the only quailty CP out there, other manufacturers' have very good products. Hoya, B+W, etc.
In my opinion, deffinitly worth the extra money.

Unfortunately, ALL polarizing filters are plastics. They may be sandwiched between glasses, but still plastics.

Also, most people don't rate the Canon filters as highly as say the Tiffen, Hoya, Lee, etc type filters, at least as far as I've read.

I use a B+W 77mm CPL. Better filters have multicoating to reduce flare and are constructed of better materials.

I would go for the Hoya, which I use or the B+W. However if you go for the thin glass make sure it will still take the lens cap. The Hoya will.
Also I believe the Canon filters are made by Tiffen. So why pay more money for the Canon badge.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
