To my suprise this happened today (Sunday) after 3:00PM. I still want a BG-E2, had one that didn't work and returned it. I sent a E-mail to Canon this afternoon. See my e-mail at bottom of page. Canons response is at the top.

INQUIRY: There are a lot of us out here wanting a answer to the BG-E2
problems. We are not getting any feedback from Canon. Lots of the
BG-E2's do not fit the 20D properly, come loose and flexing causing
power loss. Also the AA battery feature doesn't appear to work in many
units. I bought one and it was so bad I returned it to B&H in 4 days. I
do want a battery grip but do not want to have to pay shipping both ways
to try one. So the question is are the ones in the stores FIX'd? If not
when can we exspect to be able to find one that works as well as the one
for the 10D? Every photography forum out here is constantly discussing
this propblem. Canon! Where are you? If you aren't going to fix it tell
us, If it is in the works tell us, if it is fix'd tell us. Just talk to
us and we will be happy.

Sounds like a common expected response from a large company. They must make sure that there is a problem with the unit they are receiving for service. Maybe if you bought from a local store they would do the leg work for you.

I too sent Canon a letter very similar to yours and got the following responce. It's as if they are ignoring this problem. This is a copy of my e-mail and their responce. If Canon continues to ignore it's customers then how long before it's customers begin to ignore them?

INQUIRY: I purchased the 20D about two months ago.(love it) I would like to also purchase the vertical grip (BG-E2)for this camera. This grip is very expensive and as you know there have been many problems with this grip since its introduction. I belong to many internet groups that are all reporting the same kind of failures with this grip.I borrowed one from a friend and found these problems first hand. For that kind of money, something must be redone before I buy it. This is not my first Canon camera. I own two Elan7e's and both of them have a grip that works great. My question is...do you have plans to redo the design flaws in this grip? This grip flexes too much....has battery issues when using two 511's in the grip at the same time, and we don't even want to talk about trying to use AA's in the grip. Come on....you are better than this and I the consumer expects better quality than this. This is your reputation here. I have spent alot of my money on your products. Give me something that I can use and be proud to own.

Thank you for contacting Canon product support. I do apologize, but Canon USA does not monitor, confirm, endorse, or attest to the accuracy any information posted on third party websites. It seems many customers are overwhelmed by the barrage of information (or misinformation) being posted on unregulated, non-Canon websites. Unfortunately, this is not something over which Canon has any control. We are able only to confirm the performance of our products based on our own testing. Canon USA has made no announcements regarding any "known issues" with the BG-E2. Your comments are noted and will be passed along to the appropriate party. Thank you for taking the time to write.

Sincerely, Jenny Product Support Representative

Canon conveniently "forgot" to address the fact that you "found these problems first hand" with your friend's grip.

I'm waiting for my grip to be returned from the Jackson facility.

Evidently the resellers are not being very helpful on this either. Probably because they are dealing with the same denial from Canon as the consumers and still have to purge their bogus grips inventory. I asked B&H if they could guarantee me a fixed (retrofitted) grip or serial number above 5000.
They said there was no way to do that. I am very disappointed and told them. <sigh> so my 20d plus accessories, purchase went to someone else. Just cuz I'm pissed.
Meanwhile I also, search for the working grip. Until Canon steps up and starts fixing the problem the resellers will probably hide behind the same veil of denial and pass the repair of their inventory to the consumer.

Has anyone been able to pick one up guaranteed that it was upgraded? Other than going and getting one retail I haven't found anyone yet.

Search engine running........

I talked to Camera Canada and they said they have the new, fixed grips.
They said they know because of the serial numbers. I read somewhere once that somebody posted that the newer grips had a red dot on the battery compartment. Camera Canada said "No, you can only tell by the serial number".

I got my grip from my local camera store in November, and it has a Serial Number of 12000+. I would think that most volume dealers would have the fixed grips by now.

Have Fun,
