Hi All,

As some will know, I'm currently building a studio, mainly for portrait work but also some product work.

I have a fair idea on kit I'm going to need but that is about it.

For that professional look, how would you go about decorating etc. What about soft furnishings for clients who are waiting/watching.

I am currenlty planning to paint the walls pure matt white. The ceiling is standard suspended white. The floor is poured concrete. I plan to paint that a mid gray and leave bare at the business end but probably carpet the photographers end (for comfort).

I.e. post up a picture of your studio including some words on how you came to decisions on what is there. I'm looking for inspiration here. :)

I'm also interested in hearing from pros who use "proper" studios (Charles, you there?) with any ideas they have or things they have seen which impressed them/helped them in their work.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers

Ian

Nice thread (start)! I'm really interested in this too. I'm completely amateur, but when I move out (after I graduate) I intend to dedicate a room to photography. I'm thinking... pure white, with an area in which you can drape stuff down (backdrop). I'll be using floodlights and lots of white cloths to start. I doubt I'd be able to afford all the fancy equipment! :D

How big a studio?
"portrait work": White would work, but for...
"product work": I'd want it to be flat black so I could put reflections where I wanted them.
"decorating etc.": What else but pics of your best work? Guerilla marketing.
"What about soft furnishings for clients who are waiting/watching.": Anything comfortable that gives a good view but isn't too close to the action. Ceiling mount small spot lights so they can see their notes. Flag (shield) them so they don't reflect in your subjects.
Don't forget the coffee machine & a fridge for soft drinks - WAY away from the action.
