I don't know how you do it Brian - I can't get within cooee of these Dragonflies for normal shots, let alone get them to perch on my finger. You truly are the macro whisperer :)

Fantastic Brian - as someone mentioned, you're the dragon-whisperer - or rather insect-whisperer!

LOL

Both fabulous shots - I havent had the pleasure of one on my hand yet.

No, they dont bite, and they are only ever likely to try and bite if they are threatened, but never actually heard of that happening to a human. I guess if I was threatened and my only course of defence was to bite, then I would LOL

lovely expressions. I'm surprised some of the replies express such amazement that you can get a Dragon on your finger - they seem naturally curious and while some will fly off at the nearest approach others are just as likely to land on your shoulder/cap/camera. I had a Dragon and a damsel on my hand together earlier in the month.

I suppose it is all a process, while getting 'closer' to nature, mentally. Most people don't 'like' dragon flies...and believe that they are dangerous. I figure macro photography is a way for some to overcome a fear, through the eyes of a lens and camera. Once in tune with it, it's like second nature. :)

Thanks for the comments all :) - much appreciated.
Always gives me a thrill when a bug will perch on your hand :)

Manish - I do a lot of pottering around in the garden and should use a barrier cream but I'm always sticking my hands in the garden pond doing things with filters etc and don't want oil slicks appearing. :)

Raquel - I was using my MPE-65 for these - the shorter focal length is an advantage because I can rest the end of the lens on the same hand the bug is on.

Just getting the shot is hard nuff.. Now putting the subject on your finger and shoot with the other hand only!! That is only within brian's set of skill.

Thanks for the comments all - much appreciated :)

Was rather lucky with this DF- it was sitting on top of the back rail of a wooden bench by my pond. I put my left hand on the same strut and was just moving the camera lens into position on my hand when I spooked the DF. I moved back slightly but left my left hand in place and the dragonfly came back and landed on my hand. Then just a case of manoevering the lens onto my hand without spooking the DF.

Do dragons bite? I'm just curious...?

I would say "YES!!!!!" to the dragonfly bite question. I allowed one to land on my hand, between my index finger and thumb. Before I knew it, I felt a burning, stinging sensation right by the thing's head. Not entirely painful, but certainly uncomfortable!

As for the photos... simply, WOW. That's all I can say about them. Just WOW.
