I can't imagine all the stars that had to line up for this one... but as I picked up my camera off a table, the stap swings down, catches the arm of a chair, and the camer drop out of my hand onto the table -- flat -- about 3-4 inches drop. The drop was hard enough to pop the battery out, and ended up breaking the little tab that holds the battery cover closed. I am traveling to India in about 12 days...
#1 - How do I check if it shoots okay? Any suggestions appreciated.
#2 - How do I replace the battery cover? Any ideas on where I can get a replacement? Or is it quicker to convince my wife that I should get the battery grip? But seriously, does anyone know if J&R or anyone will replace that part?
Thanks

If it shoots ok I would go with the battery grip. - useful in the longrun.

well to check to see if the camera still shoots ok, I would go to a store and ask to try out the grip and see if the camera works. Then by the grip and don't look back. IF you don't want the grip, but it still works, try going on ebay to see if they have a new door, or call canon to see if the they can priority ship it to you, the battery door os very light, so it shipping should be quite cheap.

Took your advice and ordered a BG, and while I was at it, got a flash-trax :-)

Aw, and I was going to suggest duct tape. :)
It worked great when I sat on my thumbdrive.
