Seems I saw somewhere that the 20D/10D recorded the distance to subject infomation when a shot is taken but I don't see it in the EXIF data. Or maybe it was an program app that calculates it...Has anyone know where this data is shown?
Thanks,
Sage

The only place i've ever seen that is on the 550EX flash just after I take the photo. Maybe it's in the EXIF too, i've never noticed it.

Distance info is only recorded with lenses that report it. Here (http://photonotes.org/articles/eos-flash/#distancedata) is a list of Canon lenses that report distance info.
I read that distance info is stored in the MakerNote section of the EXIF header as proprietary data. Therefore, most non-Canon viewers and/or EXIF readers may not be able to display it properly. IIRC, Breezebrowser can and does display distance info, when present, because the author reverse-engineered the encoding.

I've noticed that Capture One v. 3.6 now extracts the subject distance in meters. (Drebel) :D

Like Steven says above, it only works with lenses that report the distance info. I've noticed that the EF 100 f/2.8 Macro does, but the EF 50 f/1.8 II does not. Like Jim says, Capture One 3.6 shows the info.

Hang on before spending money. the 20D does NOT record subject distance at all for any lens.

Where does C1 3.6 show this info?
Thanks

Hang on before spending money. the 20D does NOT record subject distance at all for any lens.I would be surprised if this is true, because the 10D does. How did you come to this conclusion?

As far as I know both the 20D and the 40D do.

Thanks for your message. But this confuse me: you mean the 20D and the 40D do record the subject distance or do not record the subject distance?

I've just looked at some images taken with my 20D / 85mm f/1.8 and 430EX
In Capture One 3.7.7 the 'subject distance' is "Unknown"
In Breezebrowser Pro it's not even listed
Maybe it doesn't show up with a 20D

My 10D used to report the distance but the 1DmkII does not. So I'm assuming the 20D, which came after the 1DmkII, doesn't either. Just a guess, though.

I know my Rebel XT did with both my 28-75 and 70-200 lenses. I'll check when I get home with my 40D and 50 1.4.

ExifPro Image Viewer is a good tool to show all the information in EXIF.
It can be download from here:

With the data including focal length, subject distance, photo dimensions and the size of CCD/CMOS, it is easy to calculate the size of the subjects in photos. Though the result may not be very accurate, but it is useful in some cases.
