I have two relatively new (Oct 07) A570s. I love these little cameras but lately they both have the same problem...they keep telling me to "change the batteries" but the batteries are fresh.

I have tried 6 different sets of three different brands of rechargebles, including a brand new set, (hey, I live in hope) and a set of new Duracell alkalines. All come up with the same message.

When I test the batteries, they say they are fully charged and they work just fine in anything else I put them in.

The message does not come up every single time, which is frustrating. The message also may not come up right away when I turn it on the first time, but then will come up only minutes later when I turn the camera on again.

It's making these units virtually unusable as you walk out the door and bam, you're stuffed.

Any ideas?

That seems to be a fairly common problem with the A570s. Could be something in the battery compartment's a little loose so the batteries don't make good contact, but that's just a guess. If that's the case, you might be able to put a thin piece of metal (aluminum foil, very thin washer or the like) at the end of one or both batteries and see if that helps. But start with the thinnest possible so you don't bend anything in the process. FWIW, the 4-cell A-series (A6x0 models) seem to be immune to this, as did the A80 and A95. And I haven't noticed reports of the A580/A590 having the problem. You're still under warranty, so it may be worth calling Canon and seeing what they can/will do about it.

Jon - thanks! I have several A series Canons dating all the way back to the A20 and none have had this problem. Interesting that the 570 is wonky. I'll try those fixes and contact Canon, too.

Jake - it's not the batteries ;)

I was having the exact same problem with an a590 that was only 3 weeks old. I sent it out to Canon for warranty repair and its all good now!
