Cool! How inclined to spray are they? The one in your picture looks pretty docile. I can see if a dig chases it but they don't just spray for the heck of it do they?
They don't really spray unless they're provoked. A woman I used to work with adopted a wild one that showed up in her back yard once. She had it for two or three years before it wandered back into the wild. She never had it defumed, and it never sprayed while she claimed it as a pet.
The one in the picture I posted was pretty young. Probably only a few months old. That was in Jackson, at the motel I always stay at when I go to Northern California. Me, Ashley, Jeff (who runs the motel) and a few other guests were sitting on the patio out front chatting when the little skunk waddled over to us. It went down the line, checking each of us out. Ashley and the skunk even went nose to nose, sniffing each other. Then, the skunk waddled away into the pasture next door to the motel. Apparently it disapproved of one of the cows, though. A few minutes after it left us, the skunk spray smell drifted over to us on the wind...

:o uh....
I take some picture out of the dusty archives and get it into PS.
Layer.
Sketch what I want, using red "ink"
Layer.
Draw in black over the red sketch making sure there's no gaps in the lines and following the original picture's flow.
"Paint Can" in the drawn bits.
Delete red ink sketch layer.
Flatten image.
Save.
One of the things I like about the Wacom tablet is the ability to turn the pen over and erase stuff just like a regular pencil...
Oh! Snap!
Edit: I was snapping Mike's comment... I posted the same time as Beefy. :p
Can somebody explain to this old fart just exactly what that term means and how it's used? I've tried looking it up and it's still as clear as mud to me...
I think I have only ever seen two like skumks in the wild and I spend a lot of time in the woods.
I've seen more skunks in the suburbs than I've ever seen in the woods. We used to have them come in through the cat door at my old house just to eat the dry food from the cat's dish in the kitchen. I once encountered one eating from the cat food dish. When I turned on the light he just looked up at me with this "Why are you disturbing me?" expression, took a couple more bites of food, then turned and nonchalantly sauntered back out the cat door. All the times we had skunks inside they never once sprayed in the house.

I know what it means, but I could never sufficiently define it. It's kind of the same thing as the kids when they say "pwned!"...

I've never heard it before John, I presumed it was some kind of a complimentary term coined by the children who were teenagers during the 80's.

Once, my brother woke up in the middle of the night with a small bird flying around in his bedroom. His cat Jezebel brought it in. Took him about a half hour to catch it and release it back outside, so he could go back to sleep...
San Clemente Island off the California coast is owned by the US Navy. A group of divers were out there for training and we stayed in the barracks on the island. I woke up in the middle of the night to find a pig in my room...
The island was populated by feral pigs that were descendants of pigs brought to the island by the Spaniards. The Navy was finally able to remove all the feral pigs and feral goats from the island in the 1980's. There was a federal mandate because of the environmental damage they were doing to the island. In a way it was too bad because it removed a source of amusement for the bored sailors stationed on the island...

I believe it comes from the late 90's, and was popularized on some daytime talk show. I want to say Oprah... Definitely not coined by children, though.

I'm DYING here.
We were having a 'teenager/parent' type conversation about chastity. Wade and I, and Marian and Joshua were in the livingroom, Tev was busy in the kitchen.
We were talking about responsibility, and choices, and how if you make the wrong choices....blah blah blah. (You've all heard the shpeel)
Wade says something along the lines of '15 minutes of fun for 18 years of responsibility' and from the other room, comes this little Tevin voice...
"Like a motorcycle!" (wth?)
 And without even thinking, I said "Yep, that's right. Ride it for 15 minutes, and you'll be paying for it for years."
 I thought we were going to DIE laughing. It wasn't intentional, but TOTALLY fit what we were talking about.
Holy crap my sides hurt.Totally funny ..once when I was a young adult I was talking to my mom ..my sister is ten yrs younger and she was upstairs right near the living room Anyway we talked about how if you date make sure you always have a Quarter with you so you can make a call if you need to get help ..lol soon we hear my sister call out ..or take a bus

Good Morning All :D
I did another quick fly by of oodles of pages of pets, comics, and other neat stuff. I sure wish I had more time to play here, but with my regular work, the reno we have started, and taking wee Jasper out for a near 2 hr walk everyday, the days just seem to come up short.
That, and seeing this is a long weekend, and I never work long weekends, I have to ensure a 3 day getaway to our property. Lots of folks coming out, the invite is still open to all you good folk too. ;)

Some before shots with the trees still up. We took out 1 green ash which was in the way of the addition, and 2 spruce that were in a bad spot and did not look that great anyway. We will be planting some better trees, hopefully before freeze up, and finish the rest of the landscaping next spring.

Jim, that looks like it should be real nice when all is said and done. Would love to see shots of the progress as you go along.
Though I hate seeing mature trees go, would agree, the 2 spruce looked rather precarious.
Funny how we get things pictured in our minds, for some reason, I pictured you on a much larger lot. Was surprised to see how little elbow room you have between you and your neighbors.

I will definitely be doing more shots as we go.
I too like to keep mature trees, but so often in urban landscapes there is no thought as to how the trees will look and function once full grown. I removed 14 poplar(basically big weeds), and 4 spruce from my back yard when I moved in, allowing the remaining trees to flourish.
My lot is fairly large for our city, at 60x165. The standard lot from 30-80 years ago was 25x120, with most houses on 2 lots. Now they are way smaller, as we try to curb our urban sprawl. Calgary in one of the least densely populated cities in the world, creating a huge infrastructure to build and maintain. Our house is 50' wide.

Classic!! that is great....
Steven Segal is way better than Chuck Norris in my opinion. I like his Under Seige movie.
Segal is...although he now plays music. Saw him in a concert in Newcastle last year. He has a blues/jazz band from New Orleans (who are actually better than him)....and boy-oh-boy is he out of shape...a bit larger than life than in his movies. However said, he still had that "if you do anything, and i mean anything wrong, i am going to rip your head off your neck" look with his eyes...way better than chuck norris though.
Okay.... random pet announcement.

No kidding!!!! Got gushy to both of those.... slightly envious too as my ex was/is a total jerk...
My mom is so funny... she can't remember Ginger's name. Ever.
She comes over and Ginger just LOVES her. Mom pets her and says... "hi, Cinna.. no, ... nutme.... no... spic.... no...."
Cracks me up every time.
I told her that ginger responds to her nicknames, (Meaning that Mom can call her 'Roo' if it's easier) and Mom said "Really? Let's see... 'Hey! Nutmeg! Here girl!' " And when Ginger didn't even look at her, she said... "Nope. Didn't work."
Our neighbors had 3 dogs... Cinnamon (golden retriever), Pepper (black lab), and Ginger (RIP -great dane/mutt).... We always called them the spice dogs!!!!! hehehehehehe
Just think of a cat the same color as Murky with a name with only one letter different...
We have a bunch of nicknames for our animals... Buddy is currently "Little Bear" because we had him clipped short because of the heat. He looks like a little bear cub. We also call him "Buppy," a combination of Buddy and puppy. Spike is currently "Snaggletooth" because of his tooth problem, but is also known as "Grumpy" because he complains about everything, kinda like his daddy... Spanky is sometimes called 'ratty butt' because he loses the hair on his hindquarters in the summer but he's more commonly known as "the cuddlebug" because he likes to get right in your face when he climbs up in your lap. Marky is "The Blind Destroyer," "Trouble," and "Squeeky," (because he doesn't meow, he squeaks.)
Marky is also computer literate...

How cool is that :) Gotta wonder what caused him to spray out in the pasture...

These guys play at the Corvallis Farmer's Market almost every Saturday. They are very good at that "front porch" style of blues. Many of their songs are hilarious, too! IIRC, a couple of them (I believe the banjoist and the guitarist) are professors at OSU.

This probably doesn't fit in the strange category, but my son's hair the day after a bath day.. before the next bath. On occasion, if it's mild skunk spray isn't terribly offensive... but I can't say I outright like it.
(ed) Oh, and the smell of sawdust. And, oddly the smell of rubbing alcohol, and gasoline ... and diesel smoke... for some reason it reminds me of unscented candles right after they're blown out.

since I'm up trying to forget that last dream I had, I read your link. Thanks Lisa, I get it now, but I'd have to be around people using it all the time before feeling comfortable using the term. Having never heard it before, it seems like sort of a weird thing to say.I don't usually use it... but am around it often with my little sisters and my teenagers. It just kinda slipped out, lol. Sorry. I always think of it as saying "Woah! That was a great retort/comeback/whatever.. he TOTALLY got you! " *shrugs* It's weird.
But I like trying to use teenspeak in front of my kids. Gets them wiggin out.

There are exceptions though... my brother got sprayed (in the face) by a skunk once, and we were helping him get washed up.... when there is that much, that close, it's painful.

do you go through travelocity or priceline or the like? I want to book everything at once...car hotel airfare...even some excursions...I'm just not sure what happens after I book....I know they send me confirmation info...but then what? Do I just go to the various places and say "I've booked this" and they'll know? Do they charge my credit card up front? Usually hotels don't charge til the end of the stay...

Different places online are different in the way they handle things.. and I can't remember all of them. I know that there are places that will charge your CC up front, and others just charge a holding fee. (Can't remember who does this though)
I've never booked everything at once through one place.
I usually get my flights through travelocity, and I book hotels and such just by searching, and usually calling the hotel directly to reserve. I know you can probably get better rates if you go through one single site, but I like to search for deals. ;)

It depends. Sometimes it is easier to go and look about. A few times going to airlines directly will give you a cheaper rate. But say for example you wanted to go to Hong Kong, business class. You could get a cheaper deal going via an Oriental Travel Agent, rather than online. I always shop about for prices.
Then on top of that, if you book your flights, the major airlines do have a small affiliation with a car rental company, so you may (may not) get money off getting a car. then you get a hotel separate.
The only thing to look out for in something like this, is that if you do book separately, and something goes tits-up at the airport and your flight is cancelled your travel insurance will only pay for the flight. But if you have money to burn and you book everything with one agency, then the insurance covers all of that up for you. There are +/- points to both ways, but for the past 8 years i've done everything online individually.
After you book it up, print out the confirmation page (it'll also be emailed to you), and keep them with you when you go off on holiday. They have everything there. If you don't get something in the email, but you have a printed sheet out, call them up and get them to confirm that it is booked and have them email it to you. And you're sorted.
99% of the times you walk up to the counter, and say " I have room booked" or "i have a car booked" and they'll just ask for your surname, and bingo you're there. For things like flights, with BA etc. you don't even need that, you just put your credit card in the auto-ticket system, choose a seat etc. and the only human interaction you have is to drop off your bags.
All these systems work, whether you're down in south africa, all the way through to france, Korea, you name it, it works.

right. Always worth checking their prices, and ones directly with the airline itself too...usually the airline (directly) is cheaper, as they don't need to cover the costs of an travel agency. But shop around.
Internal flights in the US, i recommend JetBlue...Externally, you can't beat Cathay Pacific or Emirates. I do like BA and haven't had a bad time with them, but avoid Delta Airlines like the plague...they are horrendous, and because of them, i've spent many nights in airports, even christmas eve night in one :(
For hotels, there are hundreds of websites. But each agency (like Hotels.com, expedia.com etc.) have a certain number of rooms at a certain price...so shop around. you may find a cheaper deal with one than with another.

a good website for most hotels in most major cities...read the people's reviews.
Oh, and look at where the hotels are on a map. Sometimes the hotels which have people say "oh it was wonderful and quiet" may be 10349234 miles away from where you need it to be.
But once you get into it, everything is so simple and easy, and there is nothing to worry about at all.
And when you book online, you can cancel it upto 48hrs before you check in, to get a full refund on hotels. Others charge you $25 for cancelling it, but hey, you get your money back.

Don't get hung up on 'big name' hotels. (Ramada, Hilton, etc)
We have had the BEST experiences in smaller, lesser known places.
Research the area where you are going, then do a search for local hotels and lodging in that area.
One of the best places we have ever stayed was an 'attached apartment' at an elderly couple's home in a little town just outside Yosemite.
Hotels in the area were outrageous $$ for that time of year, and I just happened to stumble across this place while searching.
It was fantastic.

good point....when I was working in Northern Ireland, i found a nice B&B and struck a nice deal with them for long term money coming in. I was going to stay for 9 months, and they had an income for 9 months which was great for them, and for me too, cheapest accomodation ever for long term...
But yes, Hotel names can sometimes be overly-grand....Especially if you're going to spend 99.9999% of the time outdoors...all you really need is a nice bed, and bathroom...any good 2* hotel will suffice, usually.
Or you could hire a log cabin instead of a hotel, which is also super fun - but that is totally dependant on where you're going to.

Apologies for a feeble attempt at irony on my part.
Usually posts with a large amount of hyperlinks in them alerts a spam bounty-hunter into a knee-jerk "that looks like spam" reaction. Didn't mean to imply you were spamming.

G'mae all.
Well, no great MMQ from me today - not feeling great - had to come home from work early :(
Loved all the furkid talk and photo's though :D
However...
Here are a few shots of our reno to date.
That looks great, Jim. You don't fancy doing another for us to move out to, do you?
Guess there is only one way to find out.
Some say he farts so loud, people in Africa go ahhhh!
:lol::lol:
We obviously have some Top Gear fans on here - have they shown the final of the current series yet where the TG guys take on the presenters from the German show? I was laughing so hard all through - then they get to the final race I thought I was going to die of laughter!!!
Soon Dan and Lisa will be buying toys again :)
Here comes Trouble:
I don't know why I went through the trouble to post it, but I just took that shot a few minutes ago and it made me chuckle...
Awwwwwwww diddums :D
Hey Lonnie....what did you do to the Chief?

Yes, I've always enjoyed it. In fact when my wife moved to the UK, I got her hooked on it too...she loves the show. But we're probably an entire series behind you lot :(

Yeah - while writing my post, it made me think of looking for it - I can't find it :( I'm sure they'll repeat it though.
Hmm. Thought I quoted you, Harm - obviously it missed  TG is great - not so much a car show as a comedy. Shame you're so far behind over there - but at least you can get it.

When we went to Hawaii we got to the airport in Charlotte at 6 am for an 8am flight. Our plane never arrived from Dallas the night before so they split us up to different planes. Our plane went through St Louis. So we had a non-stop flight from ST. LOUIS! to Hawaii. Over 8 hours. We arrived in Hawaii at like 9 pm local (that would be 5 am ET so we had been up for almost 24 hours)! and by the time we got to our hotel and settled, ate some dinner, it was after 1 am local time.
We loved every bit of Hawaii though! I would do it again, even with the delays!

I always end up talking with the air stewards, stewardesses, esp when i am going on monthly meetings to the same destination, you can pick up some tips of places to go. And I end up speaking to them for hours on the international flights....then from that i've had free upgrades to 1st class, bottles galore of champagne etc. etc...
Only because it is stupifyingly boring when you either (a) travel alone, or (b) the movies suck because you've seen them on the previous flights and your wife is sleeping, so i just need something to do.
I can't sleep when travelling, so 24-48 hrs being away with no sleep, been there and done that, but i am sure one day my body will not be able to cope like that anymore...

Although 1.5 hrs from Newcastle to Paris on Easyjet, for £40-50 each way is a steal

I'm glad it's not just me... I have never been able to sleep on a plane - even on the 11hr flight from Vancouver. When I came back from my last trip to the states (a few years ago now) I was so tired when we got back that I was starting to fall asleep driving on the M25!!! I had to find a services to rest and drink plenty of caffinated drinks.
(the rest of the family had also fallen asleep so I couldn't even talk to them to keep awake).

I've already started making a list....
Any of these on the list?
hyperventilating into a sick bag before the plane's actually stopped boarding
repeatedly asking the air stewardesses for bags of barley sugar
wearing huge bangly brass bangles to stop air-sickness
shouting out "Woah, this beats my Pinto!!" when the plane accelerates down the runway
ask to look through the window (on the side of the plane opposite to your seat)
wearing a so-wester and insisting on keeping it on
carrying a gold-fish in a plastic bag full of water and then worrying that it might explode when the cabin pressure changes
Chet
