Out of curiosity.... how long does it take to dump a 4 GIG card ?
I bought the cheapest reader I could find. Paid $18.99
I just did a small test. I loaded a 4 gig Extreme II card (not the fastest card out there) up with D40D RAW image files (314) and then copied them to my hard drive.
Total time to copy the card to the hard drive was 6:12
I'm sure the Sandisk rocks but by how much ?

My 4GB cards are about a minute-ish. Firewire is lovely :)

Which card ?
Trying to find out what bearing the card has on the download speed.
Firewire is faster than USB2 in real use....but the writer is specd at 40m/sec. if everything is perfect (it never is). therefore to move 4 gigs would take, at best, no less than 1:40.... still, very very fast with Extreme IV cards.
edit: I just checked Rob Galbrait's tests of card readers. With the Extreme IV it does actually get 40m/sec (slightly under). With Ultra II, the card I tested my lowly reader with, it did 12m/sec. or 5:33 to read 4 gigs. I would save about 39 seconds with the cards I use.

I just did another test with a Transcend 2 gig 133x card. Took 1:25 or 2:50 if it was a, theoretical, 4 gig card. Seems the card has more effect on the speed than the reader. I'll stick with my $18.99 reader and put the difference into more cards.

I have Sandisk Extreme USB readers. Cheap as chips, quite fast, and includes a CD of RescuePRO - which is quite good recovery software. My only niggle is they come in a fancy gloss black finish that looks like ass in short order if you do anything more with it than just keep it on your desk. The reasons I went with the USB version over the firewire are A) cost and B) USB version has an SD/SDHC/MMC/MSProDuo slot in addition to the CF.

I Have a 4GB Extreme IV and three different card readers - Here are the download times for a full 4GB of 400D Raws
Transcend USB Reader (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820208398) 323 secs
Sony MRW62E Reader (http://www.sony.co.uk/biz/view/ShowProduct.action?product=MRW62E-S2&site=biz_en_GB&pageType=TechnicalSpecs&imageType=Main&category=CPP+Multi+Card+Reader) 194 secs
Sandisk USB Extreme Reader (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/446771-REG/Sandisk_SDDRX3_3IN1R_Extreme_USB_2_0_Card.html) 118 secs
I had also bought a Sandisk Extreme Firewire Reader that could supossedly reduce this to sub 60secs, however it came with a 8-Pin Firewire 800 interface and would not work on the 4-pin Firewire 200 interface on my laptop:(

I intended to buy the Sandisk Extreme Firewire Reader, but, like you, I have only the 4 pin interface on my laptop. Does anybody know if anything SIMPLE can be done to make it work, I'm thinking of some sort of adaptor cable ?
Thanks

Here's a link to Monoprice.com (http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=103&cp_id=10301&cs_id=1030104&p_id=328&seq=1&format=2) that sells the 4-pin to 9-pin firewire for less than 7 bucks! This place is very reputable among the home theatre crowd.

well i don't like sandisk. my first one died and the one i have now has to be unplugged and replugged to work at times and sometimes the card doesn't go in smoothly.
i won't be getting another sandisk after this one.

$99.99? Henry's is ripping you off! it's a card reader, there are hundreds of them, cheap and cheerful that do the job just as well.
What's the difference between a photograph downloaded from a $100 reader and one from a $25 reader?.....The $25 reader was 75% cheaper! they either do the job or they don't.

True, but if you have lets say 4 4gig cards or more full from a all day shoot you don't want to wait all day to download them.
He's asking about speed also.
