The male is the smaller one, who gets eaten by the larger female.
Taken beside my garage.

Fantastic photo! Roughly how big were the spiders? The female looks quite intimidating.
I managed to capture this little guy today. It was ~1/2 in (12-13mm) across and quite shy.

Well done! I've tried to photograph spiders and they're tough because of the DOF needed. What kind is it?

jwcdds - the spider is reasonably large - about 3" from end of a leg to the other. Love your shot - I want to try and get one that close next time. Waiting for some extension tubes :)
TammieO - Its a Golden Silk Spider. Very common in Oz - quite harmless (provided you're not allergic to spiders - then their bite isn't fun) and not agressive, but scary when you walk into their web in the middle of the night and feel it run across your face :)

... 3" and running across one's face. =oO
I'm not allergic to spiders. But I'm pretty sure I'm allergic to overgrown insects. :D

:)
They make their web incredibly fast ... you can go out in the early evening and come back home a few hours later and walk into a web ...
