Both the ipod and the mk2 have firewire connections.
Is there any reason why one couldn't connect a Mk2 direct to an ipod with the right cable?
Would this activate the ipod's Photo Import function?

Welcome to the forums (I see it's your first post).
I have neither an iPOD nor an 1D Mark II, but this is most likely not going to work.

Thanks for the welcome.
Reason I asked is that I was speaking to someone who has found a similar solution using another type of MP3 player.
If I got my facts right it was a direct cable link between the player and Mk2.
At the moment I have a Belkin card reader to do this job but it is painfully slow and eats up the ipod's battery power to such an extent that, although a neat solution in theory, its hardly workable in practice.

One device or another needs to contain software designed to read the files on the other device or to send the files to the other device. Neither the camera nor the iPod contain such software, which is why you need the Belkin card reader.
Some MP3 players are coming through with such capabilities built in.

in addition to the very slow media reader, belkin made a digital camera link which was faster. but people have had nothing but problems with them. they even say on their website that they may discontinue it - or they may update it to 4g compatibility. either way i wouldnt trust it. and the media reader is too slow and i hope your battery doesn't cut out during transfer...
firewire on the camera is great because you can use software (explorer, dedicated canon software, or third party) to take the images from the camera and onto another storage device. this software doesn't exist on the camera, nor does it exist on the ipod. that's what the belkin link did.
i have a photo ipod which i use mainly for listening to mp3's on the plane (i travel *lots*) and displaying the low-res images on the hotel tv. i just picked up an epson p2000 which is fantastic at taking images off the cards and storing it on the unit. it even displays raw files. it also plays mpg4/divx/xvid movies too!

Someone (Belkin?) makes a USB converter which allows you to connect two USB mass storage devices together and transfer files between them (IIRC, something other than Belkin's Digital Camera Link for iPod w/ Dock Connector, part F8E477). I don't think there's a Firewire equivalent, though.
