Scott,

Your pictures are incredible. Mind telling me how you captured such great images. What kind of equipment did you take with you? Did you use fill flash or natural light? How did you pull off those amazing night shots.

I have a Canon 10D, 420EX, 50mm mkII 1.8, 17-40mm 4.0L, 28-135 IS, and 75-300 IS. I would rather not lug all this arond the park. What do you consider absolutely necessary? Any info will be greatly appreciated.

Awesome pics. Amazing fireworks shots too! Did you use a tripod? Looks like you found the perfect spot.

Thanks Mike & James!

The first gallery (disney04) was done with a Leica Digilux 2, which has a 28-90mm lens. The other two were done with a Canon G3, which has a 34-140mm lens. I used those cameras because I didn't want to lug stuff around all day. For your setup, I would think that your 28-135 lens would be the best lens if you had to take only one. I didn't use flash of any kind - most rides don't let you use flash, and the light would ruin the effect anyway. Leave your flash at home (or in your hotel), and use the built-in flash for candids of your family at the pool or dinner or wherever. The night and fireworks shots were taken with the help of a "minipod". It folds up to be small enough to fit in your pocket. I look for trashcans, fence rails, etc., to put it on. Since you're taking the heavier 10D, this might not be an option for you. Go to your local store and see if your camera/lens combo works with that small of a tripod. I wouldn't want to carry a full-size tripod around all day, but you do see people doing just that (take my advice, though, and don't!).

Scott's pics are great, and he clearly goes there too frequently. ;) Of course, my girls are already bugging me to go back...

Here are some of my pics from last year:
http://www.pbase.com/m_schlesinger/disney

Let's see, at the time it was 10D with 28-135 IS, 50mm 1.8, and the Sigma 17-35. Don't have any of those lenses anymore, but I recall I got most use from the 28-135.

I also have a handful of infrared Disney shots taken with a G1 in this gallery:

Mitch,

Your photos are great. I am getting really excited about our trip. We are going the 2nd week in June. I have got to order some extra memory cards and batteries before then.

P.S. I really liked the infrared of the castle.

Wow, all these shots of DW. Now I want to go back just for the sake of photographing! Oh, and I love Epcot... :)

Tommy, you have to post the result when you get back! :) I've been to Orlando 3-4 times. Celebrated New Year's in Epcot once. My folks and I had one of the best New Year's there.

Sure, I also have about 450 photos (not just WDW) from my previous visits they are just not online presently and they are not the same quality as my photos from recent year with DSLR.

I have now reuploaded my 650+ snapshots from my 3 visits to Orlando, bear in mind that they are holiday snapshots. Theres nothing spectacular and definately not the same quality as those sdommin have.

Like the previous poster I have a couple galleries online but just Vacation snapshots. www.btoups.com/gallery (http://www.btoups.com/gallery) Some Decent some really bad but the gallery's main purpose is to do what Digital Pictures are ment to do SHARE. I just could not stand having well over a thousand pictures sitting on my puter and nothing done with them.

That said since I have gotten into the Digital Gallery I realized how inferrior my pictures are. So I bought myself a DRebel and am learning to take photographs. WOW what a learning curve. So far I have been able to get slightly better pictures than my Sony 717. But with time and better lenses I think I will be able to improve on it.

BTW. I have been to Disney World about 9 times all for over a week. My first child is only 7months old so I think I may go back in the next couple of years. I will be looking forward the new adventure Disney World has to offer me. Photographing their beautiful scenary. Hopefully by that time I will have a 28-135 IS or similar.

What hotel are you staying at, Mike?

We got two free nights at all-star movies via the kellogs promotion. If we like it we will probably stay their the other four nights, if not we may move up to one of the moderate resorts. I really don't plan on spending alot of time at the hotel...so it doesn't really matter to me. I've still got to order at least one more memory card (I have a 1GB) and a fresh set of batteries. I hope to bring home some great pictures, but I want to make the trip about being with my family and not being behind the camera.

Tom,

Thanks for the link to your gallery. The pictures were great. What did you find the most difficult about photographing at WDW? Just curious.

Hi Mike,

The parks and resorts certainly are designed to be photographed, so you won't have problems finding things to point your camera at! I returned from my first trip with my G3 with about 1700 shots and movie clips. I was lucky to have a laptop with me for offloading files from my CF cards each night. Most were not "great" shots (I'm still learning), but I kept them anyway as a record of my trip.

As for what I find difficult about photographing there, 3 things come to mind:

1. When the parks get crowded, it can be tough to get good shots without someone else getting in the way, especially at the more popular photo locations. I either try to be patient and wait a minute for a break in the crowds, or plan to get to the park right when it opens and take my important pictures before the place gets too busy.

2. When touring a park with a group, taking pictures is not usually a priority with the rest of my party; there's always that push to get to the next attraction. I feel a lot of pressure to work quickly when everyone else is either posing or waiting for me, and often wind up settling for mediocre shots. In my case, I have spent more time than I care to admit in the parks by myself, so I was able to take more time with my camera then, and didn't worry about it as much when I was with others.

3. I always feel a great urge to take pictures during the shows or inside the attractions. Unfortunately, there is not always enough light (I always obey the "No Flash Photography" rule in the attractions that have it), so I tend to get disappointing results. You might do better, since you can crank up the ISO on your 10D much higher. Also, I get so wrapped up in taking pictures that I don't pay as much attention to what I'm supposed to be enjoying. I try to make it a rule to just watch the first time I see something, and take pictures on a repeat visit.

You'll have fun taking pictures there, not only of the Disney sights, but also of your family's reactions to them. I also think you'll like All-Star Movies - it's my favorite of the Value resorts (so far, anyway - I'll be staying at Pop Century next). All-Star Movies has much more Disney-related theming than the others.

Enjoy!

i just wanted to add that there's nothing wrong with hanging out in the parks, especially to get that photo or video. its a great place free to walk around.

but i do get that wierd vibe from people:

"where's your wife and children? You're here by yourself?? huh??"

I just keep taking photos and do the things I want to do because in a group that rarely happens, like you said.

.

looking at your photos I think they're pretty cool. they're snapshots but the vast majority of mine are as well.

After looking at scott dommin's, I thought i had wasted a great deal of money and time and should have taken up cross-stiching instead.

then again, i know enough to know i don't know enough. and i'm inspired enough to know I can do the same type of photos if I put in the time and practice.

in the end everything in life works that way.

so keep shooting!

Thanks for saying that! I agree with you, there's nothing wrong with it. I guess my comment was worded that way because I'm often embarrassed by my fascination with the Disney theme parks. But everybody has to have a hobby, right? :)

Also, I just added another gallery, photos from my October 2003 trip: http://www.pbase.com/tominpok/wdwoct2003

Enjoy!
