I know it's a far cry from most of the other shots I've seen here, which I find to be truely inspirational . I took it using the macro settings so have not gotten rid of the background. This will be the next thing to conquer.
Please post any C & C

Jay590,
I totally agree re the background. Not the most pleasant to start with. My next trick is to start playing around with the aperture settings to try and narrow the field of view somewhat and blur it out.

Some advice please.
This photo was taken with the automatic macro setting on the camera, which resulted in the fstop being set at 5.
As I want to blur out the bulk of the background would I have been able to drop the fstop down a click or two. The lens is good to 2.8. The inbuilt flash fired when the picture was taken.

It's not necessarily about the background being distracting. You need to get lower down to the level of the fly, and focus on the eyes. Is that a crop or the fullsize shot?

Don't recommend shooting any of the auto modes. Learn full manual, that way you control the aperture etc - you'll get the nice blurry bg/bokeh you want.

Get closer. The closer you are, the sharper your shots will be and the better bokeh you'll get with smaller apertures.

Good capture. I'd forget the macro setting on a DSLR and just use either Tv or Av modes for natural light shots with or without fill flash or use M mode for full flash shots.
