View Full Version : 24-70L wobbliness normal?

I noticed that I can detect enough movement that I get a slight knock with the lens extended (24mm) and gently grabbing and rocking the front of the lens. Is this normal?

Also, I notice the initially slighly stiff zoom ring has loosened up and I can detect a little side to side play in that too. Normal as well?

The lens is a couple of months old.

has it been dropped or knocked? is it possibly it may have been?

if anything seems out of the ordinary, take it to a canon authorized distro and / or send it to canon for service

That lens is built like a tank. It shouldn't do those things.

I have had mine for about 6 months now and while the zoom ring was a little stiff at first it does not wobble at all .

What I mean there's a little detectable 'slack' in the zoom ring - that's all. It's on the virge (in my opinion) of just being a tolerances thing. But as has been quoted, the lens is 'built like a tank' so I'm not sure this should be normal.

I don't normally grab the end of the lens and see if it moves from side to side either (!), but again, the question is really if the design of the lens is such that I really shouldn't be worrying about this kind of stuff?

I've just checked mine and would say there is a barely noticable 'slack' in the zoom ring I would guess about 1mm of movement.

Yes, not really a problem, but enough to notice when you use it. Gives a slight 'feeling' of sloppyness rather than tightness. Question is only if a lens of this class/price should be like this/if it's the way they are/if my copy doesn't seem right. I'm just not sure where my expectations should be - hence asking how other's are.

Same applies to other point of a little lateral movement possible at the font of the extended lens - not something I'll be 'testing' much!

That's my mate, I'm Wibbly Wobbly ;-)

Once, using this alias, I had someone asking if my last name was really Wobbly. I never met anyone called Wibbly myself. When I replied I didn't understand why people found my name so funny, I got an apology. I guess humour doesn't always travel too well by email.

I have a little play in my 70-200 2.8, and I checked others at the store and they all seem to do it. But I never noticed anything on my 24-70 2.8. Take it back and compare it to others.

I have the same problem and called canon about it. The linked thread has a recap of their response.

It should almost be perfectly tight, I have never ever noticed any play.
