I have seen several posts discussing the merits or otherwise of using a hand strap. In all the pictures I have seen where said hand-strap is mounted the camera is either a 1 series or a non 1 series with a grip attached.

I would say that I use my camera in portrait mode for at least 50% of my work. I guess if you have a hand-strap fitted you are limited to using only those controls that are located for use in landscape mode.

Is that not a problem?

no, you just rotate your wrist, and you're good to go. the camera will "hang" from the strap, so to speak.

But you are using the controls on the top of the camera not the ones on the grip right ?

Correct

BUT using the grip is still not an issue. The handstrap does not get in the way in vertical position without your hand in the strap (you are not limited to "landscape mode".. it doesn't cover the buttons or anything). I love my grip+handstrap on my XTi, I wouldn't have it any other way!
