Canon EOS 300D just stopped working for no reason ?

Hey guys i have a canon eos 300d digital camera. We have owned it for almost 2 months and it has been wonderful. Never had a seconds trouble out of it. This morning while the camera was in the off position i took out the memory card and replaced it with another memory card so i could pull some family photos of the memory card. I went to turn on the camera and noticed something was up ?

I did manage to see an error 99 flash i think, but thought o thats no biggy since i recently read over the trouble shooting. Anyways I checked the memory card and battery which was freshly charged and both were secure and installed correctly. I turn the camera back to the on position and nothing, I have tried to turn it on several times today and it will not power up.

Any ideas on how or why this happened and is this a known problem for this model, i appreciate any help you guys can pass on. This camera cost quite a penny in new zealand and for it to be pampered and so new and then not power up after hours of troulble shooting has been quite disapointing.

Things I have done: checked and rechecked secured battery and that it was charged completely. memory card was checked numberous times and is correctly plugged in.

Watch out for support in NZ, my 20D had an issue right out of the box that I discovered shortly after (a mild case of amnesia, i.e. it reset when I removed the battery). The store I bought it from said that they would send it in, and it would be a few weeks. I was not at all happy about being without it for 'a couple of weeks'. Turned out it was the lithium cell, so I just replaced it.

Funny though as most error 99's I have heard about come right after a reset?

funny you should say that about nz support, we ran into the same exact thing, they were not willing to help trouble shoot, they knew nothing about the camera wondering if a possible power surge did something to the camera, and of course the model doesnt even plug into the wall, rofl ! so we got the same thing, they are sending it off to canon up in auckland.

im still curious as to how this could have happened with a brand new camera that has been flawless up until this morning, when it decided hey i refuse to turn on ?

There are some simple reasons why a camera won't turn on.

For example, if the battery pack is slightly loose in the battery compartment, that'll do it.

If the CF door is slightly "off", that'll do it.

bob i agree with you there and suspected as much, but diligently tested and problem solved with that as well. camera is fine, while its off i swap memory cards which we have (2) Sandisk 512mb compact flash cards and thats when it all happened, i turned the camera in the on position and nothing ?

Ceasar, have you tried to remove your back-up battery. Mine 300d once stopped and only came to live when i removed this battery. It's in the same compartment as your other battery, just on the side.

There are door switches on the CF compartment and the battery compartment. Try working those doors a couple of times just in case the switch is malfunctioning.

Hey Caesar, I just got my Rebel back from Canon 2 days ago (Mine wasn't turning on either)

The battery was charged, my comp recognized the CF card so it wasn't bugged. I took it to the store I bought it (Samy's Camera) and they tried one of their batteries, still nothing.

Turns out one of the leads was bent / broken off in the CF slot (I assume I put the card in the wrong way one time) So it eventually blew a fuse or something, Canon fixed it no problem no charge in about a week.

All I can recommend is ship it to Canon:

Being in New Zealand, shipping it to the states would be a bad idea. Returning it to the place he bought it from is a much better idea here in NZ, or the Canon service centre in NZ.

Don't know if you managed to solve your issue, but I just had a similar experience. I found that one of the compact flash pins were bend. Probably happened when I replaced my compacft flash card - to a card that I had neven used before.
