View Full Version : Counter problem & backup to CD-ROM?

Hello,
I just got my EE gallery setup. Cool! I'm just having a problem with the counter graphs display. My max counter right now is only 22 but all of the graphs are 1-2 pixels wide. I'm wondering if perhaps the old counters from the demo exhibition are still stored somewhere which makes my counter graphs so small? Is there somewhere I can reset this, or is there some other reason for this. As I understand it, the largest value should be 100% wide and the others should be relative to it, right?
Also, I was wondering if there is a way to run this gallery from a local hard drive or CD-ROM. If I copy all of the files from the web server, will that at least serve as a backup that I could use to restore the web gallery or is there a database stored somewhere else that prevents this?
Here's my URL: http://www.morpheusmultimedia.com/gallery/list.php?exhibition=3
Thanks in advance,
Michael

Hi Michael,
The counters have a certain internal multiplier - if every exhibition would have 100% width for largest counter value you would not be able to compare different exhibitions easily - that's my logic behind it. In any case EE1.3 will have userdefinable multiplier value so that you can scale the bar lenght to something more presentable (or hide all counters until they have some meaning in PR work :)).
Also, I was wondering if there is a way to run this gallery from a local hard drive or CD-ROM. If I copy all of the files from the web server, will that at least serve as a backup that I could use to restore the web gallery or is there a database stored somewhere else that prevents this?
Normally web servers have a "www root", under where all files accessible by a browser must reside. All gallery data is stored in MySQL database. EE uses PHP to accesses MySQL server, and MySQL can be practically in any location that can be accessed by PHP - it can be on another server, too (provided that firewalls etc allow connection). So copying php files does not make a backup of the gallery, but backing up MySQL database does. 1.3 will have a MySQL backup utility included.

Thanks Pekka! BTW, your G1 and D30 images were a big part of my inspiration to pursue photography and purchase a G2. Canon should really be giving you some sort of commission! So, thanks for that and for your wonderful Exhibit Engine creation. I just upgraded to 1.3 and it has some excellent improvements! I look forward to your future additions/enhancements and will definitely be sending my registration fee once the new version is finalized.
Just for my clarification: the backup/restore feature only deals with the MySQL database information and doesn't affect any of the PHP files, right? Also, this .sql file that gets saved - it can't be used on a local hard drive, it can only be used if we upload it back to the web server via the restore function, right? It's nice to know that we can backup all of the information and save copies of it to our local computers though, but I was originally wondering if it is possible to store the database and PHP files on our hard drives and run the Exhibit from there or from a CD-ROM? This isn't possible, is it? This isn't a really big issue for me anymore though, now that there's the backup utility.
Oh, and I set up the counter multiplier in 1.3 and it works much better now. I'm quickly getting more hits (I'm up to 5067 thanks to our friends at DPReview.com) but for now it's nice to see the graphs more distinctly.
Coming from you, the comment on my photos means a lot. Thank you!
Michael
