...not one to normally feed into the general rumor mill, but just got a bit of information from a reasonably credible source (local reseller), his comments were apart from the name and obvious improvements around features (as seen in other recent EOS models such as live view and sensor cleaning) was that it was going to utilise the EOS 1DsMk2 16MP sensor as it is a proven sensor that provides a good upgrade and leverages existing technology investment.
Time frame according to him was around October/November.
Not sure of his sources though, he is not one to form unsubstantiated speculation though.

Would that be a Digic III itteration of the 1DsMkII sensor or still a Digic II ?

That is information I don't have, I would think it would be safe to assume DiGiC III though.

It always seems like it is a couple of months away... I swear this last year has flown by cause I am living in anticipation... I guess I sure need to take a breather...

There will always be a new model around the corner, I personally have no interest at this time in the 5D replacement as I just got the 40D less than a year ago (was going to wait until the 50D but my 20D wore out )
Canon need to be careful though, I am sure the rumors of pending cameras hurt sales in the short term (the wait and see approach). They seem to have the x00 series and the x0 series in leapfrog of each other though, if they got a forth camera vertical in order then they would have a new DLSR every six months :D

from what i gather the prosseor and the sensor are 2 separate entities, so they could take the old sensor and have the images captured by it processed by the new digic 3 processor

I think you will find that if canon was going to use an older chip, they would out a digic3 processor on it. Since every new camera that has come out in the last year or so, this would make sense
It would be interesting to see what the results of this combo would be. Would the 16mp old sensor be good enough to use at higher ISO, giving the fact that it's been driven my digic3?
But until something comes out, it's all up in the air.

I'd very much doubt them re-using an old sensor.. technology moves forward, not backwards.

Yep, all speculation.

Its been done before (D60-10D-300D & 20D-30D).
Nothing wrong with the 16MP sensor, I would be very happy to have a camera with one of those in it :)

Tech question...if they use the old 1Ds II sensor, can the camera be increased to 14bit?

idk what's gonna happen and I don't have huge expectations on a launch date... but it would seem to me that it would be announced within the next few weeks.
They announced the 5d on August 22, '05 - and it'll be 3 years just about now. Also, Photokina is comin up in September and I would expect them to have it out at least in time for that.
hopefully not too much longer as I've already set money aside for this thing

Thats a really good question, if the sensor is really a analogue device with a DAC then probably yes.

Hmmm...I wonder if they could put the new microlenses on the 1dsII chip, digic III, and 14 bit conversion. Potentially quite a nice set-up!

If Canon really wanted to to step it up they would give us Digic IV with the ?D ;)

Why would they use the 1Ds II sensor?
Just cut a bigger piece from the 1D III wafer like they did with the 5D (cut from the 1D II wafer). Same pixel size as the 1Ds II (0.0072) but a newer design, with better light gathering ability.

Oh - cutting the 1D III wafer gives you approximately 16.3mp @ the 5D's sensor size - just a touch less than the 1Ds II

Well, 5D is a quite special camera, the relatively small pixels amount makes it very attractive sinca almost no noise until ISO400... So putting the high-megapixel sensor into it doesn't look to be a nice idea. Since the 5D is a camera for artistic purposes it would be nice to keep the pixels amount the same but making the microlenses and sensors bigger.
