Hey guys! I'm very new to the forum (have only posted few pics/comments so far). This shot was taken during my son's Cub Scout overnighter on a battleship in Baton Rouge, LA - 10:00pm, very cold, only had a few minutes to take some pics before we continued the tour. I was still using my Rebel XT, as I hadn't bought the Mark III yet. - M, 1/30 HHeld, F2.8, 42m (24-70), 1600 ISO (remember, minimal lighting, couldn't bring tripod, so yes, it's noisy). Didn't know what to do about the blown out highlight at the top where the light was.

Rather effective actually.
Considering through the "porthole" you can see a Naval uniform...it works for me!

Just out of curiousity, was this scene made available for visistors to see what things would have looked like back when the ship was in commission? In other words, you could look but not touch?

Bob - the ship (USS KIDD) had different areas that were accessible (we slept in the actual stacked hanging bunks -obviously, I don't know what they're called) & other areas - living quarters, barber shop, medical areas - that were kept set up just as it was back when & we were only allowed to look in the doorways or windows. It was very impressive.

Flying Photog - thanks for the comment. I looked at your site & can only say, when I grow up as a photographer, I want to take pictures like you! Amazing!

FWIW, the technical term for a bed on a ship is a"Berth" and the sleeping quarters are called "Berthing Areas."
They also call them "Bunks" or "Racks." Sounds like a great adventure for the kids!
And thank you for your kind words regarding my photography efforts. My skills are a work in progress (hopefully moving upwards...)

Didn't know what to do about the blown out highlight at the top where the light was.
Crop tighter, or just leave it alone. It's not that distracting imo.
I live in Denham Springs, grew up in Baton Rouge. I was actually sitting on the levee the day they towed the Kidd to town (was just a kid myself). If you like shooting in this kind of environment, I'd highly recommend the USS Alabama in Mobile and the Naval Aviation Museum at the NAS in Pensacola the next time you head to the gulf coast.
