Challenge #64 -- "Stuck in the Middle"
Show me your best shot where you, as the photographer, are in the middle of the action. I want to feel like I'm a part of the scene and involved with the moment. This would suggest wide angles but it is, of course, open to interpretation.
The modern day master of being in the middle of it is Bruce Gilden (http://www.magnumphotos.com/Archive/C.aspx?VP=XSpecific_MAG.PhotographerDetail_VPage&l1=0&pid=2K7O3R1482X4&nm=Bruce%20Gilden) -- "I'm known for taking pictures very close, and the older I get, the closer I get."
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This comp is all about having a bit of fun. Be creative and give it your best shot!
Posting will end at 9pm PST Monday August 25th, 2008 and Winners will be announced
as soon as possible after the contest has closed.
Photo Submissions:
1. Camera - Any Canon DSLR Camera
2. Time - any on-topic photo taken at any time is eligible, although photos that have won other competitions should NOT be entered.
3. Size - Please see the Image posting rules.
4. Post-Processing - do whatever you like and the host will decide if it works.
5. Posting - * ONE PHOTO per photographer in each challenge.* Photo Name in the message subject line.* Camera model & lens used.* Notes -- post brief EXIF data including ISO, shutter speed and aperture used.
6. Commenting - No commenting during challenge. When the posting is closed and a winner has been declared, comments can be made in this thread.
7. Have FUN!

To make this more interesting, I'm going to throw in a USD $25 gift certificate to Adorama or B&H as a prize to the winner of this week's challenge. (Residents of other continents may pick another store if they offer an equivalent online gift card.)

Saying Goodbye:
http://divinemethod.zenfolio.com/img/v1/p538380155-4.jpg
Congratulations, dm, this is a wonderful shot. I've looked at it for quite a while and it is still intriguing. The figure on the left is perfect with the anonymity. As I'm not versed in the culture and the dress, I'm not sure if this is a sad moment or a happy goodbye (but I am guessing it is a wedding). I was concerned with the processing if that was an added blur but I see it was zoomed while exposed... excellent.
There were a few close runner-ups that I pondered over for a while; specifically the dancing fish, and Chinese Lion. The fish was really close and I think it would make a lovely art print. I liked the Lion parade due to the inclusion of the couple on the right and the oof lion on the left made you feel part of the action. I also liked the Cheese Curds but wished it had a better human moment in it; and the museum was a good setup but again, needed more of a decisive moment to set it apart.
Thanks to everyone for submitting a photo, another wonderful week of entries and a hard decision.

A few more comments on why this won... I think it took the opening line of this thread and the theme very seriously. If your photos aren't good enough, you're not close enough... and divinemethod was right in the thick of it with this shot. You couldn't get much closer and still have context. I like to feel like I'm elbowing my way through the crowd and have the photo show that this is the action in the middle of it. And it leaves more questions than it answers... awesome.

If it wasn't for the fact that the best pictures are being chosen I would believe this was becoming a Canuck conspiracy. I guess all the good photographers are coming out of Canada now.

yaay! My first ever contest win on POTN! Thank you theHOFF!! this pic was a bittersweet moment, in their tradition the father gives the hand of the daughter away to the groom and they all say goodbye to her, and share a few tears; here we have mom hugging and grandma about to cry. I found the colors of the original too strong and fighting with the emotions (bright reds, yellows, and backlit window) So I cross processed it, using color balance in PS.
