I'm thinking about picking up noise ninja, but haven't seen it in action anywhere. I've heard good things about it. Anyone here using it? Is it worth the $? I'd love if I could send someone ONE image I have and have them run it through their Noise Ninja so I can decide if it's something I need or not. It looks like their trial version pastes crud all over the images... why not just give a 10 day trial like everyone else?!?!

I'll probably go buy it anyways, but I'd feel better if I could get some advice before I do so.

Thanks!
Adam

Good idea getting someone to do it for you on one image-just be sure to give them the settings you want used on it.
Also that noise reduction programs don't allways work on some certain types of noise. This is rare but it would be missleading if your example pic was one of the odd ones that don't work too well.

By the way-do you know that neatimage is also an excellent program and comes in a free home use version?

I haven't tried NeatImage yet... forgot about that one. Thanks for the heads up! My image is pretty good.. 300dpi but shot at ISO400 in low light (with two flashes, a 550EX and a 420EX) I was kind of hoping someone could work on it in Noise Ninja and let me know what settings THEY used to give me a headstart when I license it (if I'm impressed)

I'll look into NeatImage and see how it does.

Thanks again,
Adam

No problem. The reason I want to communicate through PM is that I don't want to expose my email address in a public forum (spam, spam, spam ...)

Noise Ninja is killer. The Windows and Mac release candidates (version 2.0.3) of the Photoshop plugin have just been posted for public download and testing. Go to www.picturecode.com for more details. For the time being, you can use the release candidate for free. It is expected that a final version of the plugin will be available for purchase within the next few months.

I swear by this application for noise removal. If you have ever used the stand-alone version of the program, the plugin version will floor you. It is by far the best out there.

I have used NJ 1.1.2 and 2.0.2. It appears that the newer version does a better job. I'd be glad to help. Let me know.

I have Versions 1 and 2 as well. All of my night football shots get the Noise Ninja treatment. It is a great program, money well spent.

Use this program, it is free and I think it does a better job than NN.

Let me know if you like it!

I have Noise NInja and it does a super job. It has profiles for the different cameras from the lowest ISO to the highest.

You can't go wrong it does what theyt say it does. Better then the noise reducxtion in my imageing software.

Hi Adam,
I use Noiseware Community Edition all the time, and the results are good. It's freeware, but I can't remember the link to their site...I'll try Google, or maybe you try it too..

which version are you using? The community version or the "standard plugin"?

Hey thanks guys for all the responses! I want to try it on this one:

http://fotop.net/adam12hicks/Sturgeon_Jan_24/onthecouch?full=1
and
http://fotop.net/adam12hicks/Sturgeon_Jan_24/ron_kathi_dogs_for_print?full=1

The first image is of one of their dogs, and it was shot at ISO400 due to the light in the room and the fact that it's a dog... and they don't sit still for long!

The second image was a sort of impromtu shot of some people I know on their fireplace in their back yard... it was dark out and to get the dogs to sit still I had to shoot ISO400. It's a little noisier than I'd like... and not my favorite image, but they like it and want it printed on an 18x24 matte or canvas.

These are in no way my crowning achievements, I was there to photograph other things (REALLY expensive cars.) But they saw them and wanted prints.

Feel free to resize for the before and after NN / similar comparisons!

Thanks!
Adam

Good Lord... that Noiseware app (community edition) rocks for a free program! If you don't have it go find TPINCHBACK's link. Thanks!

I ran it the first try in 'portrait' mode and it really does an awesome job.

Compare the image in the previous post to http://fotop.net/adam12hicks/Sturgeon_Jan_24/ron_kathi_dogs_for_print_filtered?full=1

And you'll see what I mean!

I've been using NeatImage for some months -- I just did a quick side by side comparison between it and NoiseNinja using default settings at 1600 ISO (ie. profiling from the image itself)

Both do a great job Neat Image might have shaded it slightly but there was no difference that would show up on a print.

Would have to test both on several images and with different profiles to say more.

On the basis of this -- since I've already paid for it -- I will stick with NeatImage until someone / something convinces me otherwise.

Here you go Adam - http://www.pbase.com/olegis/noise_ninja
The images were converted using the default settings, noise profiles were chosen according to the ISO field in the EXIF data.

P.S. Those 20D files are BIG ! ;)

Thats the same thing I said when I first used it! It is a great find!

I shoot many college basketball games and have no problem pushing my camera to 1600 and 3200 with this program.

The community version is the one I am using.

Also, I love the fact that you can drag and drop into this program like photoshop.

Looks like that free program is pretty slick.
Here's a comparison with noise ninja and that program:

Here are the full images, which are pretty sizable. :)

I think I'm going to get Noiseware, it seems like it uses some different math that might be better in some situations.

In noise ninjas defence, I think it is more designed to deal with noise from higher iso such as 800 and up... the images here aren't realy that noisy...

I use noise ninja only when shooting ISO 1600 and 3200, now with MK II, I don't even need it for ISO 1600.

Btw, new version beta is out, 2.0.3 both plug in and standalone version.

Olegis... thanks for running it through the filter for me. It looks like it really does a nice job!

I think I'll stick with the freebie for now... at least until they start charging for it :)

Thanks again...

Nice job done! Do you use NJ's built-in sharpening or do you USM using other software? Any chance to try using NJ with its sharpening and do a USM subsequent?

Appreciate your comment. :D

After personal testing of a number of products, here's a vote for Noise Ninja.

It helped tremendously on a recent assignment to Myanmar (Burma) where many of the images were shot at 800 ISO on the 20D.

http://www.pjsaine.com/PhotoJournalism/OrbisIndiaChina/PJSOrbisIndiaChinaMain.html

My Noise Ninja style is to batch - profiling each individual image, leave sharpening off totally, and dial down both smoothness settings somewhat.
