I'm shooting a quick portrait in a few hours; sadly I only have my 40D + 580 EX on me. I don't have PC cables or PWs!

I believe I'll be shooting in a small, completely white room (windows closed + curtains). So I could bounce the flash off the wall and have it hit the face from the side. Or, I could bounce off the ceiling...

What's the best option? I could (maybe) create a quick beauty dish? What are other DIY options? A small softbox?

Try both. Also pull out the white card on the flash. I would think that bouncing it off the ceiling will suffice. If the room has a window, then by all means use it!

If there's a window then use it! Otherwise, bounce the 580 in different directions to see what you like and use the built-in bounce card if you're bouncing straight off the ceiling. Or use the window as key and flash for fill. Just play around.

Bounce the flash of whatever looks good :)
