Hi and welcome to POTN, this post is probably in the wrong section but not to worry!

When you mean the camera is slow to reload are you referring to the time it takes for you to be able to takes for the on-camera flash to become usable again. If so then yes a external flash would be useful. If your budget can't stretch to a Canon 430ex II or 580ex II speedlite, you should be able to find a second hand older model speedlite for a good price.

I used an old full manual Sunpak flash for the longest time before getting a 430EX. It worked just fine, and taught me a lot about on camera flash.

The 430EX is about 240 USD and the 580EX II is around 400 USD or so. The 430 is more than enough for most people!

If you can afford it I've heard good things about the Canon Speedlite 430 EX 2 - the recycle time is very fast.

Quite a few people from the UK have purchased from Ian (Kerso) who sells imported US goods in the UK for cheaper than UK retailers. If you do a forum search you should be able to find a pretty long thread of recommendations and purchases. Drop him a message and ask for a quote.
