First one looks quite surreal.
Second one, is clearly an edit, but still looks good.
What lens length were you using?

I used a Tamaron 28-300 5.6
The second photo was edited in photoshop, I just turned the background B&W and increased the contrast.

I like the shots a lot, but with the processing it makes it look like the cars were dropped in from another photo.

The auto focus does not seem to be that good . I manually focus most of the time.

Nice job. How did you get down so close to the track? I went to the local dragway last week for the first time, but stayed up in the stands. I tried using a polarizer, it helped remove the reflections from the track surface and car windows.

I am new to drag racing photography. Any pointers on what works and what doesnt? I thought the first shot was crisp clean and to the point especially with the depth of field.

First step is get in with the track officials or acquire credentials from the track.
I usually shoot with a mono pod and I keep one eye on the tree, your reaction time needs to be as quick as the drivers. If lighting permits I keep the shutter speed at 250th, F8.
Hope that helps.
