View Full Version : Flying over Mongolia - what could this be?

I got really bored on the plane, so I took a bunch of pics to keep me occupied.

Flying over desert and out of no where, I saw a bunch of these dark fields. Very sparse. I can only assume it's agriculture related, but I rule it out since it's in the desert unless there is something I don't know. :-)

Thanks,

My guess is also that they are crop related. Any chance they have a rainy season, or wells that could be used for irrigation?

Area 51 East or crop squares?

Could they be shadows from the clouds? They all seem to be about the same distance from cloud formations, which if the sun was to the right of the picture would be about right.

I think he's talking about that big rectangle, not the cloud shadows.

It looks like something agriculture related to me, too. Strange that it would be way out there, though.

Duh. Talk about me not seeing the forest for the trees! That'll teach me to try and think at 2 AM

Yeah it is strange.

Looks agricultural - but I'm not sure its a cash crop of poppies for heroin. Monogolia isn't really in the heroin trade.....

Judging by their shape, size, colour and proximity I would have to say that they are....wait, I have no idea;)

Having spent "too much" time in the Middle East, I've seen things in the Arabian desert that look completely out of place. Dairy farms surrounded by sand, and crops growing green and lush. I think its safe to say that as long as they have a good water source, they can grow things about anywhere. Impossible to tell what type of crop, but very sure its a farm of some type....or is it?

Thanks for all the input.

Looks like the concensus is some kind of farm land. Quite bizarre being that there isn't anything around from what I can see at 30,000+ft and these anomolies show up here and there over 1 hr of flying. However, I cannot imagine what else it could be besides being a growth ops of some sort. :-)

Here's the same picture, cropped:

It doesn't take much airigated and cultivated area to change the looks of a parcel of land. It's probably a dry ground crop that doesn't need very much water or it would be a lot greener and stand out more. From what I read, they actually grow a lot of rice there, which is what this field could be. They also do wheat, barely, potatos and stuff like that.

I'm not a trekkie, but damn those Borg! They need to look at upgrading their cloaking device, if it still casts a shadow!
