I did this manipulated photo to emphasize the tension and thoughts a person must encounter when diagnosed with hiv/aids.

Grusome yes - but what do you think of the photo ?

I think its very artistic, and at the same time tries to portray the feeling, I notice "Shame" then "no" near the person, then i'm drawn to the red ribbon in the bandana. I Guess in a way it is a powerful image and good compostion, with good use of negative space almost alienating the subject.

Very strong, haunting, thought-provoking image. Doesn't have to be AIDS to relate to it.

Artistically: yep, I like this. Very striking and thought-provoking.

Commercially: it certainly looks like some of the images you find in New Scientist or similar magazines. Potential sales for you?

Well done!

Sorry, but I am going to have to be the dissenting voice here. I like the image and the post processing, but to me it misses your point.

First, I don't see the "tension and thoughts a person must encounter when diagnosed with hiv/aids." The (difficult to see at first) red ribbon on the scarf is not enough to identify and having an aids dx. Those ribbons are worn by supporters, family and friends. Another problem wit the ribbon I see is its location. Being on the scarf, it does not seem as though it is a, well, "branding" - it seems more as being worn. Now if it were larger superimposed on the models chest (think "The Scarlet Letter") - now that would be a branding.

Second is the text, "no" and "shame". It is either too much or not enough. I work with terminal patients all day long. I assure you that if someone just got a new dx, there would be more than just two thoughts. The point would be better made with the hundreds of overlapping, conflicting, simultaneous thoughts. Some that come to mind would be "anger, suicide, guilt, who?, why?, there is no god, freak, no love, tainted, hated, despised, why me?, rage, death, end, empty, alone, so very alone". Again, with just two words, you go way beyond economy all the way to missing making your point.

PS 1 - The best photo I ever saw to display "shame" was one of a nude female standing in front of a plain background, head down in her hands as though she were crying. There were 2 dozen red (paint) hand prints all over her body, legs, arms. The title of the shot was "Date Rape"

PS 2 - One of the most touching funerals I ever went to was for a guy I know who died of aids. It was quiet, moving, and solemn, but then they played the old Partridge Family song, "Only a Moment Ago" and the place came apart.
