Hey all,
Last tuesday I headed to Rijssen for Flogging Molly. Concert was sold out, 1250 tickets. 3 song rule. I'm not too happy with the results (I guess I was way too busy with the light metering, mostly because of the white clothing of the singer), but I'm still curious what you think of my photos. And well, I still did a better job than Lucky's own photographer....
Shot with 1D mk II and 28-70L, 80-200L. Also took a few photos with my 16-35L and a 1.4X extender, but I'm not sure whether or not those made it to the final selection.

I wouldn't be displeased with these at all, they look great. My only minor grumble is the crop on #3 and #4. On #3 I'd bring it in closer to his arm, even though you'd be cutting through the lights and on #4 I'd crop tighter and have the subject to the left to keep her out of dead center -- IMO having that negative space at the top would have only worked if you hadn't cut her arm off.
Great set overall, though.

I'd crop a few a bit different (#1, 4 and 7).
#1 looks a bit bright.
Certainly not a bad set however.
I like #5,6 and 8 best, #4 least.
#5 is better then 2 IMO.
I'll have a good look when I'm at my desktop ;)

Thanks for the comments all! I'll respond to the framing-comments later.

Bought this camera 2 months ago, yes. I almost had a car accident last April and since then my 20D was a bit.. well... crappy. A 1D mk II was on my wishlist before, so after losing almost all interest in photography because of not getting the results I was used to, I decided to buy one. I still own my 20D too, but I'm not sure whether I'll send it for repair or not (they wouldn't tell me how expensive it will be).
Masks: yep, when I think I should use mask, then I'll use them. I usually do DPP for white balance and use PS CS3 for any further adjustments.

Very nice. #3 and 6 for me are awesome!
Love the camera tilt in #3. Works well because the right edge of the image lines up approximately with the right edge of the accordian.

1, 2, 4 & 5 have problems with blocked faces. Other than that it doesn't look like you had much to work with ... it ain't ATAK! The venue is the same size as mine but it looks tighter packed. I just sold my 1DMII and 1DMIIN this year. I loved them both and they are excellent. Did you get a used one ... how much?

Hmmm I know, she was really tough to take photos of. I was bit too much on the left to take photos with more of her face, and didn't really have many possibilities to move more to the right.
Doesn't look like I had much to work with? With which you mean?
1D mk II bought for € 1300 (which is pretty cheap), used one indeed.

On the crops;

I don't agree on #3, I think that crop is just good the way it is now. Think that's just opinion ;)
#4: I understand what you both think. I have chosen to use this photo to show some of the backdrop. Not something I'd usually do; in fact I think I'd have said the same thing when someone else would have posted this photo. Situation "when editing it seemed to be a good idea, but now I'm not so sure anymore" ;)
#1 and 7: bit curious how you (René or maybe other members aswell) would crop those. I'll upload the originals (without crop) for you ;)

I meant that the lighting doesn't look very helpful and there does not appear to be much room in which to manage the best angles.

Well I definitely had enough light to work with (never had so much indoors since, well, long time ago I guess), so that wasn't really the problem. Wonderful lightshow, but someway a bit hard to photograph.

I understand that in some ways the lighting may have been significant, but having a good light show or nice effects doesn't always translate into having good light for the performers themselves. The four high powered follow spots at the casino are always a huge advantage since they are used along with a vast array of other stage lighting, smoke, screens, etc. that usually provide excellent and expansive opportunities. This venue seems a bit limited in that way.

3 and 6 for me. I thin ka fwe could be saved with a bit of cropping-- composure is what is lacking for the most part

agreed 100% w/ John.
i really like that in #3, you waited for a moment which wasn't 'up the nose', despite your angle...it works really well.

just a quick "technical" question. if you only had three songs, how did you get from the front to the back for that last shot. the crowd looks rather large. am i missing something?

Few quickies on the way out!!!
Usually the rule applies mostly to the pit. I am usually allowed to continue shooting from the rear of house, as long as im not obstructing anyone's view. But lets be honest-- only so many shots you can get from back there without dwights lineup of lenses :P

Run, don't walk ;)
I usually start up front, then work my way back and around.
Always easier to get away from stage then toward it.

At the left side (from the back) there was a giant curtain behind one of the bars. 5 meters through audience, then I guess 10 meters behind the curtain, then a quite empty part, then 4 steps upstairs on a platform in the back of the hall.
I stopped photographing I guess on 3/4 of the 3th song and I took the last 4 pictues from the back in the first few seconds of the 4th song (ssst) ;)

I usually start in kneeling down in the center aisle about 15 feet from the stage and shoot for the first song unless it goes on and on. Then I move to one side of the stage up closer. There is no pit but there is a clear area between the first row and the stage of about ten feet. I then often go to the other side of the stage (in front, not on the stage level.) That usually takes two songs. Then I move back to the light board as well as behind the light board where the elevated seats are ... I stand leaning against a guard rail right behind the LD (usually my friend Rich.) If things go longer I walk back down the right side of the room and shoot from the wall on the side and back up front to shoot at the audience. There is no allowance for "additional shooting" after the song limit at my venue no matter where you go.
