Seems there are a lot of folks looking for these fellas in and around Montreal. Due to the harsh winter up North, Great Grey Owls have headed "South" and a bunch of them have taken up winter residence just north of Montreal on a island called Ile Bizard.
I decided to do a quick drive around the island this morning to plan a Saturday morning shoot. Found the spot where a lot of folks go to try and see an owl. Even a few cars there from VT and NY. continued driving about a mile or so and found this fella sitting on a Hydro line. No one around for miles. Grabbed a quick shot and I'll (we'll) be back bright and early Saturday morning.

It looks like you lost the element of surprise with this guy. I think that's what they call a 'furtive' glance.

Great shot.

I get the funny feeling that this was a lucky shot. I talked to some folks who had been out all morning and the best they could do were a couple of crows and a bunch of Justabirdies.
This might be the only GGO I see all winter. I think I'm gonna frame him :) :) :) :) :)

Wow, that's a great shot of the owl, Ian, with the nice blue sky as the background. Hope you get more tomorrow.

And when you're done with them up there, how about sending them down our way all the way south to Pennsylvania. Tell 'em we have lots of pesky squirrels and chipmunks they can feast on down here.

Dude, fantastic shot. Ian was kind enough to call me at work and give me all the details about the owls he was seeing and I wasn't. Now what are friends for. Like I would ever do anything like that.http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gif

Ian was kind enough to give me directions to this area and drove through on my home from work (ok I left early) but I didn't have my camera with me. I saw five of them in about 45 minutes. One was on a tree about 40 feet off the road. I got out of my car walked to within about 15 feet of him, he never budged. I walked back to my car and sat and watched him for a few minutes and drove off. Talk about a perfect opportunity without a camera. Duhhttp://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_cry.gif

I'll most likely be wandering around there on the way to work in the morning (ok, I'll be late).

Well, if anyone's looking for me I guess I'll be in Montreal this weekend.... I don't have an owl pic yet, and it's always a good time.

Plus I still want poutine...

Think about how upset you'd be if you HAD brought the camera... but only had the 15mm fish-eye....
