That is because it does not have spot metering, it has partial. If you want spot metering you will have to get a 1D or a 1Ds.

I think that you will find that the metering modes of the 20D work just fine for all but the most difficult of metering situations. I have over 20 cameras (including the 20D) with all sorts of metering options including some that purport to have a 3 degree or even 1 degree spot, however, if I want extremely accurate spot metering, incident metering or even flash metering, I use a Gossen Starlite. It has a a true 1degree spot metering setting and I simply transfer the settings to a manual mode of the camera. Sometimes we tend to try to find criticism of a product where none needs to exist.

If you put the 20D on Partial Metering and attach a zoom lens that has the subject fill the viewfinder, voila a spot meter. Set the camera in Manual Mode and switch to whatever lens you want.

I get tired of "Hey! I want a spot meter".
The camera has a historgram review. If partial metering blows the shot. . .you will know it. And fix it. If you have enough of a clue to use a spot meter, you have enough of a clue to use a partial meter to correct your shot.

Amen, Jim. I really get tired of all the whining about the lack of a spot meter.

It's a never ending circle..
I bet there are those that are tired of the whining about the whiners
;) we can allways choose not to view the posts that have the "offending" subject clearly named in title ;)
Personally,. I do not see where Simon was whining,. he was merely asking a question with the clear possibility that he may have missed something in the manual :(

Simon,..
I find I use the partial metering on my 1D more often than the spot.

Just for my own peace of mind, I always carry a Spotmeter with me. I currently have an older Pentax analog unit that remains my favorite, although I also have a Pentax Digital and a Sekonic L558.
I have to meter by hand when I'm using my long glass anyway, so it's not an inconvenience, and the results are 100% reliable.

I know, I usually just read them for fun. I'm in a sarcastic mood this morning.

My old P & S had a spot meter, so I assumed a DSLR would have one. Not!!

It's been on my wishlist, too, and for a while now. But I'm not proud, so I'm accepting donations if anyone's interested. Help liberate my L558 from the confines of the wishlist.
