I understand that the BP-511A battery that comes standard with the 20D, has a longer life than the BP-511.(More photos per charge)
Would the BP-511A also last longer in the 10D or Rebel Digital, or is there something in the electronics of the 20D that would not make this possible.

depends on how many milliampre hours. like 1800maH rating of the battery. the higher the number the longer the charge or the more shots or what ever. I would just bring along extra batteries. I only have two right now, but i'm goning to get too more. I'm sure 4 10D batteries will last longer then 1 20D battery. =)

I bought five 1500MAH batteries for 5 bucks a piece and two 1800MAH batteries for 7 bucks a piece on ebay, and I find that the 1800's last about 100 more shots then the 1500's.

I buy batteries from http://sterlingtek.com , they're $12 or so and provide a 12 month warranty.
This is the 2nd thread about bats in about 20 minutes.

To answer the original question more directly, I can say that the old one and the new one are mechanically and electrically virtually identical, except that the new one has more capacity.
Think of it this way. On your car, you can put a ten-gallon gas tank, or you can put a twelve-gallon gas tank. In some cases, you can't tell the difference. What's in the tank gets used the same way.

I've often read not to use non Canon batteries. Are those $12 not cheaply made? Or don't overheat. Maybe I could get a few.

The $12 ones look basically identical to the genuine, expensive Canon ones. They definitely last longer on a charge too.

As Cadwell said Jesper, thank you for first straight answer to my question.
I did however find the other response of interest.
Thank again

I've been using the 1800mah batteries off Ebay... works great and lasts longer on my 10d and now 20d... I have not had anything go wrong with them (yet). I'll buy more if I find a need (currently have one BP-511A and two Assu 1800's).

I have two Canon batteries (one came with my D30 and one with my 10D) and 8 non-Canon batteries. Two are the Lenmar batteries from B&H and the rest are generic batteries I got for about $10 each. After a year and half of use I'm starting to see a couple not holding a charge as long as they use too. One is the Canon batteri and the other is one of the generic batteries (not the Lenmar). But I can still get at least a couple of hundred shots out of them in raw at 400 ISO and with a IS lens (all of these affect how many shots you can get from a battery). I'm going to be ordering another 6 or so of the $10 or $15 batteries and if I get over a year's use of them again, it's money well saved. I just wish the generics came with the battery cover that the Canon's do. But I don't t hink the cover is worth the extra that a Canon battery costs. :D

I tended to go after the non-Canon $30 batteries, up until several months ago. Somebody had them two for $25, shipped. I think a bunch of us here jumped on that deal, and they have turned out fine. They have the 1500 mAh rating. However, to some users, the mark of a good battery is whether it lasts two years or three years or more.

Are you talking about the small rectangular pieces of plastic that clip onto the bottom of the battery? The batteries I bought from http://sterlingtek.com came with them. I notice they've just increased the mah rating of their 511 compatible batteries too.

Yes, the little plastic sheild that comes on the Canon batteries so the batteries don't short out and burn up your camera bag... or your pocket if you have them there with your keys. :D I've even looked at getting a molded plastic maker that model makers use and making my own and sell them myself.
I took a look at their web site the other day and noticed they had lower mah than a couple of other places that had batteries for the same price. Maybe they were still cleaning out old stock. I'll check out sterlingtek again.
Thanks

They're 1500Mah for $12 now. The ones I got from there were 1300 or 1400 from memory, work quite well, and come with those covers.

I just ordered 6 batteries. If they last as long and work as well as the other generic cheap batteries I bought then I'll be satisfied with them. Thanks for the reference to this site. Places that sell batteries at this price are all over the place, but I'd rather buy from a place that I've used before or that is recommended by those that have used them. It doesn't gurentee anythig, but I think it helps improve the odds of getting a good product.
