Thanks, Pratman64 :) . That snake shot won me a few contests ;) . The Sigma 180mm is an impressive lens, imo. Quick AF and awesome IQ. Built very well. Had mine for 4 years, no problems.

As well as being an excellent macro lens it's also a great performer for normal telephoto work. I had some fun tone mapping these with Photomatix:

Nice shots. I did not know Sigma made a 180mm. Why this lens over the Sigma 150mm f2.8 Macro??

twoshadows
30th of August 2008 (Sat), 15:06
Actually,

I bought mine before the 150mm Macro came out. Glad I did. This is a stellar lens, imo. I have the 135L, so the 150 is a little too close in FL. Also, at the time I was shooting butterflies a lot so I wanted the extra working distance over, say, the 100mm f/2.8.

Those hummingbird shots are really top notch. Detail, exposure, DOF and composition are all excellent. I wish we had those birds over here.

WOW...just WOW...those might be the best Hummy pics I have seen. And now you just confused me completely. I had been planning on getting the Sigma 150mm macro AND the Canon 200mm f/2.8L along with a plan to add the 1.4x and 2x teleconverters. But now maybe I might think about the 180mm instead of the 150mm.

Wish there were more folks posting example pics in this thread. But from what is here really has me thinking things over...great more confusion in my life...just THANKS ever so much!

I took the plunge and bought the this lens the other day. It should be here tomorrow AM. Can't wait...I have a passle of hummies in my sights. We feed about a zillion of them and, well, it's sort of like shooting "birds in a cage" to get shots of them.

It was the humming bird shots that really sold me on this lens. I am sure I would have been happy with the 150mm but, I am hoping this will be a good zoo lens too. Especially if I pick up a 1.4x.

I also really like the MFD of about , what(?), 18". It will help me get close for a lot of jewelry shots I need for eBay selling. Much better than the 55-250 I love for a walk around.

Had some time to play with the new toy tonight and here are the results...I'm, well, amazed as these were handheld of the works from an old Elgin ladies pocket watch:

http://brecklundin.com/web/macro/IMG_0432-Edit.jpg

A bit closer and cropped tighter:

http://brecklundin.com/web/macro/IMG_0431-Edit-edit.jpg

I am really happy for my first less 'numpty' sorta shots. Amazed at how sharp these really are. Played with the DOF by opening it up all the way and it really does have a huge affect. Now I must go and find DUCKS!!!

And oh, yeah these were taken the way I take a lot of getting to know a lens shots...floating on the old waterbed so higher shutter speeds are a must, especially w/o OS/IS... ;) I can tell this lens is gonna be a keeper.

How do you guys find the speed and accuaracy of the AF system? I have the Canon 100mm usm Macro which is fast enough to get by using it as a normal 100mm telephoto as well as macro work.

Opps my bad, thought you were taking about the canon 180.

The Sigma 180 HSM is fairly fast in AF speed for me when I place it on the limited range vs. full range. Most of my photos are made with MLU and time exposure to prevent any distortion from mirror slap. I actually focus with AF and then go into manual focus before the actual picture is taken. I like Combine ZP and use it quite frequently.

It did not work in this instance....

Charlie - love that flower shot, there's a lot of dimension in it. Anything special for the lighting?

wesjr

Thanks for the kind comments. My technique helps control the light on the flower, stem and background.

I stopped using flash about 18 months ago on my studio floral shots. My two 42" PhotoFlex diffusers work real well to block window light. They bring the highlights and shadows closer together giving more even lighting and pop to the photo.

When I'm outside, they come in great to block the wind also....

I've just bitten the bullet on an ebay for one of these lenes. I'm curious if anyone's had calibration issues with theirs? I used to have a Sigma 70-200/2.8 and a 100-300/4, both were great optics but both needed calibration to sort out a factory back focus issue.

Hi Gareth,

Mine was good out of the box. Still, if you have problems I'm sure it will be taken care of under warranty (assuming you have one with the lens you bought).

Congrats and best of luck with your new lens!

Congrats and best of luck with your new lens!

Thanks, because Macro lenses aren't usually shot wide open, to get extra DOF. I guess any back focus or mis-alignment would get eaten up by stopping down.
I already have a Canon 100 usm Macro, which is great for handholding. But I want to try a longer macro. I want to be able to isolate backgrounds better.

I have shot hummingbirds at wide open or near wide open using AF - no problems. This lens, as far as I can tell, does not suffer from inconsistent focusing problems like, say, the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 or Sigma 30mm f/1.4. In short, I don't consider this lens to be the crap shoot that other Sigma lenses may be.

Ian,

I also feel the Sigma 180 f/3.5 HSM focuses very well. It's an amazing lens that worth every cent I paid. Love your use of color, contrast and shadow to give this bearded iris a wonderful feel.

Charlie,

This is probably the best shot I have seen of this particular type of orchid. I have tried numerous times to get what I would call a good shot of this flower with no luck (There's one in flower upstairs as I speak). Excellent work :) .

I've even thought of selling mine because I don't use it often, but that would be a shame. Plus I don't think I could get what it's worth (It IS worth every penny) .

Thanks for the good words on the bearded iris. Flowers were one of my early passions in photography.

One of my earlier, lesser attempts. I was rushed on this shoot. A woman wanted me to photograph her admittedly beautiful orchids, but wasn't willing to understand the time it sometimes takes to get "the" shot.

Very nice work. It does take time to get good floral results. I like the mixture of shadow and light in these moth orchids. Your composition is most excellent.

Mine has just turned up today. Its not as heavy as i'd expected, but I'm used to a 70-200/2.8. The hood is quite stiff to fit but seems to do a good job. The Sigma tripod collar is an excellent design and puts Canon's baby collars to shame. The Focus ring is more stiff than I'd expect for an HSM equipped lens. I've owned the 100-300/4, 70-200/2.8 and 12-24 previously and they were all silky smooth and very light to the touch. This lens is a little gritty.
Optically....it's very very sharp. I think that at 3m my Canon 200mm f2.8 is sharper wide open and stopped down to the same aperture...but that's not a macro lens. Up close...it's dof is dreamy and it's very sharp indeed.

ummmm...KenjiS, glad the lens is working on your 30D. I seem to recall the older Sigma 180 might not work with all EOS bodies w/o being re-chipped. Can't wait to see some shots. I love my 180mm EX DG...I was lucky and scored mine for about what you paid during the Live.com 25% Cashback deal...it was used but hasn't disapointed me at all.

Oh there was one before the one that we have that lacked the HSM, it likely needs rechipping (Actually they had a 180 f/2.8 Macro at one time I saw one in Nikon mount, it went to 1:2 however and not 1:1) The only difference between the DG and non-DG sigmas is the coatings on the glass

Mine works perfectly! no front/back focus, nothing wrong with it

KenjiS,

Darn, what lens am I thinking of then? Maybe it is the precursor to yours. But when I was hunting the mine, I KNOW I ran across "a macro lens" of the same focal length, which fell into the "might (or not) need to be re-chipped" class for most newer EOS bodies. Then again I could have been off in my own world and made it all up...nothing new there. ;)

Anyway, I had noticed your shot in the macro challenge and thought it was nice. I like your first one here even better.

If you are into watch photography in case you did not see it a while back here are some of the most amazing shots:

Just got mine in today, $400 from KEH. Thanks goes to Kenji for linking the webpage to the last one they had. I haven't got any serious shots form mine yet, but I've been shooting everything there is in the house. This is a pretty cool lens. Focus is slow if it has to go the whole range, but what lens wouldn't be. Otherwise, focus locks dead-on every time. The only shot that wouldn't focus, and I'll ad it, was a shot I tried in ambient light of one of my sets of cuffs. There's no contrast under ambient, so the lens couldn't lock, I went to manual for the shot.

Of course, I still need to learn the finer points of macro-shooting, but once I do, Wowee!!, are the shots going to be fantastic through this lens.

Exif is intact...

hahahaha....ya make me laugh because I was exactly the same when mine got here last fall. Macro is a BLAST as there is always something to shoot. And as I tried different shots I began to see that it is not near as simple as the "pro's" make it seem with their consistent HQ shots.

I think you will find that AF is not always that good for 1:1 and above macro shots that fill your frame. If you read the macro talk section the tips there are great. I learned that it is easier to set the magnification on the lens then move the camera back and forth to get the focus you want. Plus that is a super technique when you finally decide to give focus stacking a shot...great free software for that too.

BTW, checkout the fun Macro contests in my sig...everyone has a blast and folks all seem to learn from each other.

Here's a few, just messing around. I haven't had much chance to play with the lens except for puttering around the house, and shooting stuff like old Hot Wheels and rings. I'm still getting used to the best way to shoot.

And boy oh boy, macro shooting under certain apertures can sure show off a dirty sensor!!

The results of puttering around looking for stuff to shoot. You know, sometimes having a new lens is a bad thing, especially when you go nuts trying to find stuff to take pictures of. I'm walking around the yard like a goofball trying to find bugs. Normally I'd be cursing if I saw bugs, but now that I have this lens, I'm silently praying for bugs. I'm really hoping that the Preying Mantis come back.

All shot handheld.

Thanks. This is actually quite a great lens to have. I enjoy using it, but I'd sure like a few bugs here and there to shoot. It needs to change from winter/spring to summer already so I have some bugs to shoot. I wouldn't normally want bugs, but you kinda can't avoid it when you have a macro lens.

Yippee!! My first bug macro. Geez, it's about time, too. Winter is finally gone, so hopefully some bugs will start showing up. Unfortunately, I don't like bugs, especially mosquitoes and such, but when you have a macro lens the feelings are torn. I'm really hoping to see some more preying mantids in our yard. We had two last year, so maybe I will see more.

Hand held, trying to keep up with the beetle walking around. It sure is hard trying to nail focus when the dang bug won't stand still.

I'm quite pleased with mine. It's not quite as sharp wide open as I'd have liked, but stopped down and it's as sharp as it gets. I find that some apertures give brighter/darker images than others for some reason. I don;t find this issue with any of my other lenses. I also find the focus ring to be a little gritty with it's movement, sometimes it makes fine adjustments a little difficult. It's a great lens, but like many Sigma's, it's just short of perfection.

Macro shmacro! The super-fast and accurate HSM when used with the focus limiter makes this a formidable general purpose 180mm lens. I was very pleased to find that when attached to my 1DMk2 last week my in-focus rate was close to 100% even when the bikes were coming directly towards me.

All these somewhat formulaic examples of the sport are at f/5.6, manual exposure:

Wow, wow, and wow. I guess everyday shooting and macro are taking a back seat to sports shooting now. I am certainly going to have to try out some subjects like that with my lens. Nobody is going to top shots like that from a macro lens, so I guess I need to step up my game or I can't post here any more.

I have one feeder about 5 feet from the window, so I figured I'd give this lens a shot at the goldfinches. Didn't do too bad at all considering I was shooting through the window. The bad part is that the sun directed right at the window, hence the funky color and brightness. I get the sunlight coming towards me, and then bouncing off the window into the birds. It would be a double whammy except for the fact that the light reflected off the window made good fill light.

Does anyone notice exposure shifts are different apertures with their lens? At f8-f11 I have to under expose by at least a stop or my piccys over-blow. F16 is fine, as is f3.5-f5.6 but f8-f11 it's all way too bright. I don't know if it's my specific lens or an issue with this lens design in general. It happens on my 5D, 5DII and 40D...so it's not a camera issue. If you looks at the history of the piccy posted on this thread, there does seem to be a common exposure issue. Some are too dark, others are too light and I don't think it's cameras or the photographers.

I've been playing with my lens and a 2xTC and Kenko rings. It's amazing what you can do with this stuff. I put the TC and Kenko rings on and shot a pen tip, which came out okay. It wasn't really a technical setup, just trying to see what I could do.

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a399/katodog/Macro/_MG_4615.jpg

Today I had the TC on the lens and was trying to get some shots of the goldfinches at my feeders. The feeders are about 6 feet from my home office window, and it was hard to shoot because of various reasons. The birds wouldn't stay put, the lighting wasn't too good. But, I was shocked to see the results of some of the images I did get. I use a cheapo Digital Concepts 2xTC, and it does degrade the image any time I use it. Not enough to make me stop using it, but enough to see a big difference. With the TC on this lens, I was amazed at the detail that came out...

Some more goldfinches. I hope I'm not being too annoying with the goldfinch shots, but I've found that I really enjoy shooting them with the macro lens. These were shot through the window, I kept scaring them away when I had the window open. For some reason they don't care if I'm standing there with the window closed, but as soon as it's open and they see me, it's off to the hills. I think the last one was with the window open.

Okay, no more birds, at least for now. Going over some "goofing around" shots from the other day. My daughter was blowing bubbles, and I took the lens out and tried to shoot some of them. I don't have a clue why, don't ask me why, I just did. This isn't the first lens someone would grab for taking shots like these, but I'm a little on the nutso side. Not too impressed with them against the blue sky, but hey, for goofing around you take what you can get. I'm silly when I get bored. Here's some results.

These two are the same shot, I just saturated the second one for some stupid reason. And it's not an illusion, there's two bubbles there...

I bought a Canon flash, the 270EX the other day. After a little thought, I mounted a Jobu Designs flash holder to the QR plate attached to the tripod foot of the Sigma 180mm. This places the flash high above the lens, near the front. There was no adjustment for the angle of the light, but velcro squares and a small white flash bounce card, plus the extension of the flash head and two stage upward tilt gave me directed flash that illuminated a zone about a foot in front of the lens.

I know it sounds awkward, but it worked out nicely in the following image. Secondly I was playing around with a watermark insert--don't think I care for it, but comments welcome.

On 5DM2, ISO 400, 1/60s @ f11, -2.0 Ev.

Let's see a shot of the setup.

As you requested:

I show the flash unit in the down and closed to normal position. In the full shot the flash unit head is extended for tele and one click from being straight up. With adjustment of the head from base position to full-up and extended for distance and location of subject, the light cone can easily cover most macro shots. The little card-sized diffuser softens and spreads the light. Some experimentation required.

I made the flower shot handheld with the lens very close to the greenery around the flower.

Thanks for the shots. Always eager to see macro lighting setups. I chose the eBay route and bought a bracket setup and two LED lights...

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a399/katodog/Macro/DSCF0426.jpg

Depending on how I put it together, I have quiet a bit of places I can put the lights. Which makes it great for aiming them differently for different subjects. I can even bend the circular brackets so the lights are aimed at an angle to the subject for better direct lighting. The lights throw a ton of light too, they're like freakin' flashlights...

I can shoot in shadow, after sunset, low light, no light, and if I lose my keys, I can use these to find them.

But, as for crime scenes, I don't know. Every time I watch CSI they're all using Noink.

Hey Gabe, these will really put you over the edge. Some rainy day macro shots. I figured I'd set up my lightbox and tripod, and standing next to the camera grab what was in reach and shoot it. It's funny, but 99% of the stuff that's within my reach in my office is knives and weapons of some type.

I think I need mental help...

Well, well, well. Katodog, you have certainly used your 180 to its potential. Bravo on some incredible shots and thanks for keeping this thread going. My 180 has been in the hands of my wife for some time now (she uses it with the 20D for her business), but I managed to confiscate it this evening for a few shots. I'm falling in love with this lens all over again <3 , lol.

Your photos are most excellent. I too have the Sigma 180 mm f/3.5 macro. It's an excellent lens in many ways. I like natural light florals.

I think so... killer sharp for portraits. You need a model/subject with good skin or a good makeup artist...as it picks up all the fine details. :D

My wife was trimming one of her potted herbs yesterday and discovered a newly hatched monarch in the plant. I took several shots. These two I like because of the detail in the still damp wings.
Canon 7D, ISO 3200, 1/180s @ f16 for one shot and ISO 400, 1/60s @ f19 for the other. If you wonder about the settings, it's set on auto ISO, so one shot the flash didn't fire. I used the setup pictured earlier in the thread.

Just bought this lens off a fellow POTN member. I LOVE IT. Just grapped my 60D, 580EX II, and handheld the shots.
