I got my Rebel XT at 13, paid for with my own money FWIW...
And recently got my 30D.
Just a random question.

Ah...when did I get my first camera....
My father bought me a Canon TX fully manual SLR when I was 10 (35 years ago). Great camera to learn on. Using manual only really makes you learn how to think about a shot. This was the camera that got me hooked on photography.

Late to the SLR's. Didn't get one until I was in my forties. It was a Minolta model, but after a year with it I switched to a Canon Elan 7e. My first DSLR was shortly after the 10D was introduced. What's that been, five years ago?
Prior to that I had a series of Kodaks and Polaroids. First 35mm was a Petri that I bought in a PX in 1968 over in Okinawa. Good little camera actually.

I shot an SLR for the first time at 16, had borrowed a Leica for a couple rolls of film. I ended up shooting mostly 50mm, aperture wide open abstract shots.
Got my first SLR later on, a Pentax at age 17, was using a K1000 and a P30, which boasted electrical film advancement and other goodies.
I was then a Nikon Pro film user from mid nineties to early new century, and have been shooting DSLR (Canon) for four years now.

I got a Praktica MTL 3 when I was 8 (1983) and I still have it and use it often. It has the second sharpest lens I own after my Leica Summicron 50mm f/2.

I was 20, and it was a used Chinon CE-4 which I bought with my own money. It had a standard Chinon 50mm f/1.7 lens and it was semi auto - you set the aperture with the ring on the lens and the camera would choose a shutter speed - or you could go manual. I loved it, but upgraded to an AF Eos Elan (Eos 100in europe) as soon as I could. I still have that one!

This was my first SLR, too. I bought mine used and it had a pretty good dent in the prism housing. Didn't affect the camera or images, though. I got it when I was around 25 years old.

Wow, I am going to sound ancient. My first SLR was at 5, and I had already been taking photos for six months or so if you consider my fathers LF 8x10. My first Canon SLR was at 24 and I recieved it as a gift. My first Digital was PS that I bought right after my divorce from first wife. My DSLR was at 42 and that was a 5D. And I am 45 and still shooting Dags on the old 8x10, as well as Kodachrome, or FujiChrome!

I bought my first SLR in the fall of 1976 when I was 29 and had been married about 2 months. I bought my first DSLR in September 2007 when I was 60 so that is a span of only 31 years. I got close to "oaktree" but a 35 year span is hard to beat.
My wife and I had gone to Dallas to see a musical but I had to stop by the camera store and make a purchase - an AE-1. She had no idea how much I would invest in photography equipment over the years but I just keep telling her it is cheaper than a bass boat. It helps that I am married to the most wonderful woman in the world.

I bought my first SLR- Minolta X9 off a guy when I was in highschool. So I was maybe 16 or 17. I used it a bit but the cost of film and developing kept me from developing much interest in photography. I just have the kit lens on that camera.
Got my XTi for Xmas last year (I was 24).

I have lurked long - rarely post on the internet. But, my first SLR was a Minolta x570 circa 1984 (still have). That followed 'borrowing' mom's yashica slr. Was in my early teens at the time. First DSLR, 2006. Long gap but quite a few point-n-shoots in between.

I was 25 and a 150 dollar used nikon f camera represented all the money I earned running a kodak 4c processer for 30 hours, but the film and developing was free! twenty years absent from serious photography and bam! youre 45 and the world is digital and 30 hours work gets you a pretty nice digital with a decent lens and if you have a computer and a printer the 'film' and developing is free again! I have gone way beyond that initial thirty hour investment, but I don't intend to have a twenty year absence this time around. This stuff is still fun!

I was 16 years old when I purchased my first SLR with my own money saved up from a summer job.
The camera was a brand spanking new Nikon F and I bought it, a Nikkor 50 f/2 normal lens and a Nikkor 135 f/3.5 telephoto.
The camera did not have a light meter so I borrowed my dad's old Sekonic Leader hand held light meter and I learned a lot shooting B&W film.

I bought my first SLR when I was in Japan in the Navy, around 1962. That was actually for my mother, and I didn't really have my own for about another 10 years, which would have made me around 30.
My first DSLR came along 5 years ago (2003), so I would have been 61.
Good things come to those who wait.

I got my first SLR in 1978 or early 1979 - so I would have been 20. It was a Canon AT-1 and I still have it. I got my first DSLR in December of 2000 - that was the venerable Canon D30. I would have been 42 then. My how time flies when you're having fun!

Interesting thread!
I don't know exactly, but when I was young often I went in dark room (camera obscura.. is it correct?) with my father, who had a canon av1 and a canon F1.
Now i use that cameras for BW films or slide; I feel a thrill when I realize that are older than me!
