These look good... were they shot with a flash? and what camera were you using?

These look really good. The white balance looks a bit off in the last few from the flash I guess? I checked out your website. Really great stuff on there. Mind if I ask what tele lens your using?

Are some of these with 200mm f2 IS?

Those are really impressive, if you happen to be shooting a Lafayette HS game and spy a student running around trying to get a shot, don't laugh to hard.

Images 7 and 8 were shot with a flash. Camera used was a Mark III.

I agree with you on the white balance, thanks. Used three different lenses during the game: 70-200 f2.8, 200 f2.0 and a 400 f2.8.

Yes, images 4, 5, 6 and 7 were shot using the 200 F2.

It is great that you are taking up photogrpahy, I still learn something each time I shoot an event and am often humbled by what others are able to accomplish with a camera. I strongly feel the person behind the camera is more important than the equipment being used.

Thanks for all the comments and questions.

Some of your shots need a landscape orientation (1, 4, 8 ) but others might be better in portrait (2, 5, 6 and maybe 7?) . Do you vary orientation and if so, how/when do you choose between the two styles for football?

Others?

For football, I generally shoot in landscape mode. I feel that landscape mode is able to tell more of a story (what are the other players doing close by) than portrait mode. Of the images I posted, image 5 I feel would be the best candidate for portrait mode, but I liked how it framed up in landscape mode :)

Basketball I will typically shoot portrait mode since the game is a veritical game and I have a better chance of not chopping of a persons head or the basketball when they are shooting. You will also have a better chance of getting the rim/net in the picture which helps tell the story of the image.

They all look really great, I do think the WB is off slightly in 4, looks a little too cool, while 6 looks too magenta (the stands)... barely.
